The ultra-"right" anti-semite is Jean Le Pen, defeated by Sarko in the first round. Sarko is economically conservative, socially moderate, and doesn't have his head in the sand wrt the Islamonazis. The latter is one good thing that Le Pen shared.

Le Pen is not right-wing by American definitions. He is a rapidly America-hating populist, totally against the free market, for government control of the economy, and is a protectionist. His party proposed to pay women not to work, proposed evicting all non-Europeans (citizen or otherwise - lily white Christians only) using only "non-violent" means, expansion of government censorship...the only conservative qualities he has are strong law and order views - his brand of 'social conservatism' is of the totalitarian kind; it is to morality what communism is to equality.

I do not agree with such a blanket characterization. France has contributed mightily to civilization. True, some of these contributions have been downright barfworthy (Rosseau et. al.), but others have bordered on the divine, particularly in the fine and performing arts.

When Sarkozy appeared at 8:30pm, half an hour after his Electionm, one of the first things he mentioned was his friendship and admiration for the US. As soon as he did, the crowds burst out into applause and cheering.

Of course France does not want to be a vassal of the US. Having a friend and ally in charge in France opens up possibilities that were closed before.

Now that we can go back to liking and/or vaguely-putting-up-with France, maybe we can better enjoy "Ratatouille", Pixar's upcoming film about a rat with cooking asperations in Paris.

I just put up a link to high definition previews to this film in this thread. It is really amazing to watch - from artistic, technical, and writing viewpoints.

So, I invite you all to celebrate the defeat of a Socialist rat in France by watching a culinary rat in Paris! Come on over to the link and check it out - I think you'll really enjoy it.

Anectodal evidence that in France, just as in the US, conservative women are much better looking than liberal women.

The libtards on the usual Dim sites are already whining about their favorite country becoming like Kapitalist Amerikkka! And worrying about the poor rioting Muslims who would kill Nancy Pelosi if they had power here.

Wow. They don’t even try to conceal their hatred of him.
Usually the NYTwits are just a little more subtle. Makes me even gladder than ever that Sarko won!

Congratulations to Sarkozy. Tough $hit to Royal, Im glad you lost. Perhaps there is a sliver of hope for France.
I hope Chirac disappears into the wind and doesn’t become a French Bill Clinton. Good riddance to Chirac.

Just turned on the tv first time since we got home and was thrilled to hear Sarkozy won. Been out of touch with the world for 7 days and it’s great to hear some good news for a change.

Good analysis.

The National Front is a domesticated avatar of Bolshevism.

The only distinction between the parties misleadingly called "far-right" and the extreme left in Europe is the subject of their hatreds.

For Hitler it was Jews, for Stalin it was kulaks, but the mindsets underlying each man's demented philosophy were essentially identical.

I share your sentiments. Things take time; and perhaps things are now moving, albeit slowly, in the Right direction. We shall see.

You have to wonder what kind of message our own Democrats will take from this? The Democrats want to turn America into a socialist welfare state like France, but even France doesn’t want to be a socialist welfare state like France.

“What to do, oh, what to do...?,” the Democrats are sighing.
