What is the significance of Iraq in the Bible?
Christian Answers ^ | 2005 | Dr. Bryant G. Wood

Posted on 05/09/2007 5:53:16 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

We are becoming increasingly familiar with the topography of Iraq as we watch TV news reports and read newspaper accounts of events unfolding there. Iraq, about the size of California, is ancient Mesopotamia, Greek for “in the midst of the rivers.” The rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, played a key role in the development of civilization in this region. The easternmost river, the Tigris, has its headwaters in eastern Turkey and flows past Mosul (ancient Nineveh), Tikrit, Baghdad, Kut and Basra. The Euphrates begins in east-central Turkey and flows past Karbala, Hilah (ancient Babylon) and Nasiriyah.

Iraq is called the “Cradle of Civilization,” as evidence has been found there for the earliest writing system, urban centers, literature, metallurgy, science, medicine and business, as reflected in the Bible (Genesis 2:14; 4:21–22; 10:10–11; 11:1–5). Our modern culture has its roots in ancient Iraq.

Biblical names for the southern part of ancient Mesopotamia [Iraq] include Shinar (ancient Sumer), Chaldea, and Babylon, and for the northern area, Assyria.

The ancient language of the region is called Akkadian, named after the city of Akkad, one of the cities founded by Nimrod in Shinar (Genesis 10:10). The language was written in cuneiform, or “wedge-shaped,” characters impressed into clay tablets with a wedge-shaped stylus.

There are tens of thousands of archaeological sites in this celebrated land. Starting in the south, we shall point out Biblical connections to some of the many discoveries that have been made in this country, so rich with ancient history and archaeological remains. These connections cluster around two time periods: the time of the Patriarchs, i.e., the Early Bronze and the first part of the Middle Bronze Ages, and the time of the Divided Monarchy, the Iron Age.

I just realized that there is a sentence there that can be taken two ways: The eagle cleansed the lands of Allah

that could be cleansed the lands that belonged to Allah OR cleansed the lands OF Allah (removed him)

I'm sure the last one is not correct but I can hope.

I believe he was talking about the actual city of Babylon not the country as a whole. As far as I know Babylon has never been rebuilt to this day.

Assyrian and Babylon were different kingdoms. Nebuchadrezzar liberated Babylon from Assyria. But it wasn’t until the Persian empire conquered both of them that the Babylonians let thew jews return to Israel. Alexander the Great took down the Persian empire and that’s pretty much the end of their story.

Yes, that Koran quote is an invention, but it is widely distributed, so it is natural that it does get picked up.

Oddly enough, the chapter 9 in the Koran deals with war, and oathbreakers, but verse 11 is about peace: “But if even such sworn enemies turn in repentance and maintain prayer and pay alms, then they are your brethern in faith. And We explain the commandments in detail for a people who know.”

I haven’t gotten around to it . . . but it is

PROVABLE from Scripture and history that Babylon has YET to be utterly destroyed and not have even goat herds reside there since etc.

CLEARLY, Babylong MUST be rebuilt—in THESE END TIMES . . . and to be satan’s world government headquarters for a limited time during the Great Tribulation . . .

AND

THEN

to be UTTERLY DESTROYED to NEVER AGAIN BE IN HABITED by any humans etc. etc. etc.

And, there are indications and reports from various diverse sources . . . that indeed, the globalist government in waiting plans to have it’s headquarters there in rebuilt Babylon.

In fact, evidently Saddam Hussein even when he was VP OK’d a chapel for the worship of satan in the beginnings of the rebuilding of Babylon.

Stay tuned. EVERY BIBLICAL PROPHECY that was timed for fulfillment before now, HAS BEEN FULFILLED TO THE LETTER. THERE ARE MANY MORE YET TO BE FULFILLED but the clock is racing forward ever since Israel became a Nation again in a day.

The outside time limit is probably somewhere around the time when the last people group to not have The New Testament in their native language does have it . . . projected to be around 2025.

It is an ancient stronghold of evil.
= = =

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

And some suggest that this is one reason there’s so much violence in the area.

Southern Mesopotamia, where the Tigris and the Euphrates flowed, first separately, then united, towards the Persian Gulf, was more beguiling in history than in fact. Here were Babylon and Nineveh, here Sennacherib had fought his battles, here indeed, some said, had been the Garden of Eden at the start of the world. But it was a fearful country now. Much of it was empty desert, inhabited by lawless predatory Arabs who loathed nearly everyone, the rest wide and foetid fen, inhabited by amphibious marshmen who detested everyone else. The irrigation works of the ancients had long since crumbled, and the long years of Turkish rule had left only decay and depression. There were no paved roads, no railways. Such towns as existed were hardly more than excretions of mud, like piles of rubbish in the wasteland, relieved only by the minarets of shabby mosques, or the lugubrious walls of forts. In the summer it was indescribably hot, in the winter unbearably cold. In the dry season everything was baked like leather, in the wet season 10,000 square miles were flooded, the waters gradually oozing away to leave malodorous wastes of marsh. Fleas, sand-flies and mosquitoes tormented the place, and its inhabitants lived lives of ignorant poverty, enlivened only by sporadic excitements of crime or brigandage, the illusions of religion and the consolations of sex.

Is this the land of dear old Adam (one British soldier wondered),
And beautiful Mother Eve?
If so dear reader small blame to them
For sinning and having to leave.

— James Morris, Farewell the Trumpets.
