Saying he believes abortion is "morally wrong," Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani told an audience at Houston Baptist University this morning that he respects a women's right to choose to have the procedure.
"I believe you have to respect their viewpoint and give them a level of choice," the former New York City mayor told a crowd of about 300 students and faculty at the school's Mabee Teaching Theater.
His remarks are part of an effort by Giuliani's campaign to clarify his support for abortion rights in the coming weeks, despite the political risks of alienating conservative voters. Giuliani has been criticized for what some have called confusing, sometimes contradictory statements on the topic.
In a stump speech outlining his plans to battle terrorism and tackle economic and social issues, Giuliani urged listeners to find common ground with him even though they may disagree with him. Tolerating differences makes the country what it is, he said.
"We understand how to respect each other's difference," he said. "It's in our DNA."
He said a strong military presence to fight the war on terror is necessary and that withdrawing troops from Iraq could lead to slaughter among the Sunni and Shia sects. And if leaders decide to begin withdrawing forces, they should not give the enemy a timetable for the withdraw.
His views and candor resonated with some students.
"He respects the choices of others," said Samantha Haddox, 20, a junior. "Because he respects others, I respect him."
Andrew Miller, 19, said he opposes a woman's right to choose abortion, but he accepts Giuliani's stand on the issue and could vote for him.
"I like that he took a personal stand on abortion, that he believes it's morally wrong."
A Republican, Miller said he Giuliani could make a good president despite his abortion stance because he likes Giuliani's position on fighting terrorism aggressively.
I want to hear more on his view that government is obliged to pay people to exercise their civil rights.
"It was fun while it lasted. And then the cancer overwhelmed it. Bye."
It was nice while it lasted....
"I disagree with Rudy Giuliani on the life issue and I think the rationale that he gives I disagree with even more because that's the same as saying, 'Well, I'm personally opposed to slavery, but if somebody else wants to own slaves, that's fine.'"

NAILED!!! Thanks JC!
And why exactly did you go to my homepage just now? Looking for a reason to whip the bloodthirsty mob into another purge because someone posted something you didn’t like? How brave. So you’ve probably also scanned my recent posts and can easily see a vast dropoff.
Sounds like Houston Baptist University is turning out dimwit relativists.
Yes, quite telling : )
“The Rooty Equation:
I believe abortion is morally wrong, and I hate abortion (b/c I know abortion kills a unborn child).
But I respect a womens right to choose (to kill her unborn child).”
If this is not clear, please send for my free booklet.... : )
Titus, I can’t quite put a handle on my increasing disaffection for this gent.
However, it is real and palpable — and I expect it is because Giuliani depicts for me a rather clear example of an essentially “lightweight” politician.
Let’s remember those many years ago, just how His Honor was elected. Again, on one issue — law and order.
But, look who and what he surrounded himself with, while Mayor. Shameful in the extreme.
In the final analysis, I am ever more feeling that there is really no “there there” with this gentleman.
Lets dust off Thompson and Hunter. At least we would then have a serious look at the real thing.
We conservatves had better get our act together sooner rather than later if we are to have ANY chance of beating out the increasisngly ominous Liberal gaggle; esspecially when we consider the very real threat posed by the left to the long-term well-being of our Republic.
I stand corrected. He interviewed 2 students, not 3. And he also said that one was opposed to "a woman's right to choose abortion" - which I missed. Thank you for pointing that out.
Not that facts matter to the goon squad these days.
Goon squad?! Screw you, Rudytard.
I liked your opus. Short and to the point:
It was fun while it lasted. And then the cancer overwhelmed it. Bye.
Now, go back to your pathetic little pro-abort libtard forum and play with your pathetic little pro-abort libtard buddies. You shouldn't be associating with us conservative "extremists" - the "fetus wing" - who have been "holding their foot to the neck" of the Republican Party for too long.
Rudy should just change parties and run as a democrat. He’d be the next president.
I spent the afternoon watching the HBU Huskies (baseball)
win the regional 6 championship! down 6 to 1...2 outs... bottom of the ninth they scored 6 runs...2 balks helped!
Rudy might as well have said “I am personally opposed to premeditated first degree murder, but I respect the right of the killer to make the decision to fatally shoot his victim.”
What’s the difference RudyTooty?
You want to talk about ‘choice’?
How about the unborn baby, don’t they get a ‘choice’?
[crickets chirping]
Rudy and his supporters are from Venus, while
we conservatives are from Mars.
And never the twain shall meet.
Maybe a secret decoder ring?
Thanks for so quickly proving my point. But since I am and always have been pro-life, I actually am a member of the “fetus wing”. Of course I’ve never used that term, but nice try. Nor have I ever type that last ‘quote’, though if I haven’t used the term ‘extremist’ in regards to some of the out of control nutters lately then consider that an oversight. Yes, I post on other websites, because I can actually discuss with people who don’t agree with me on every single issue. Is that somehow bad now? Wow, a whole whopping 38 posts in almost 2 months, were you disappointed that you couldn’t dig up any dirt? Are you aware that I also post on other websites about politics, sports, business, and the weather? And what’s the point in snooping around like that? Is that supposed to be intimidating, or a purity test, or are you going to ask me to wear a yellow star now, or what? Used to be FR spoke out against Pellicano-esque tactics, now the recent goon squad employs them. I found it particularly disgusting the way that little video was frothingly posted repeatedly on the purge thread, ya know, the video of a guy pummeling over and over someone on the ground. Reminded me of what the Dem union goons did to Don Adams. Sad irony, how some have become what they fought so hard against.
Well good for Rudy,, You stick to those guns , Rudy..
To waffle now would only be a further revealment of how much of a politico you really are.
