Changes on Neptune Link Sun and Global Warming
Geophysical Research Letters ^ | may 14, 2007 | H.B. Hammel and G.W. Lockwood

Skeptics of manmade global warming have found further support in research linking solar output with the planet Neptune’s brightness and temperatures on Earth.

The findings appeared in a recent issue of Geophysical Research Letters. The authors of the article, H.B. Hammel and G.W. Lockwood from the Space Science Institute in Colorado and the Lowell Observatory in Arizona, note that measurements of visible light from Neptune have been taken at the Observatory since 1950.

Those measurements indicate that Neptune has been getting brighter since around 1980. And infrared measurements of the planet since 1980 show that Neptune has been warming steadily as well.

The researchers plotted on a graph the changes in visible light from Neptune over the past half-century, changes in temperatures on Earth during that period, and changes in total solar irradiance.

The results: The correlation between solar irradiance and Neptune’s brightness was nearly perfect; so was the correlation between changes on Earth and solar output, according to a report on the research appearing on World Climate Report, a climate change blog.

“When the sun is more energetic and putting out more energy, the Earth tends to warm up, and when the sun cools down, so does the Earth,” World Climate Report notes. “The Hammel and Lockwood article reveals that the same is true out at Neptune — when the sun’s energy increases, Neptune seems to warm up and get brighter . . .

Could be. Phase states and transition points might be discovered when New Horizons gets there.

Do the Jupitarians know of this development!?

Not entirely. Pluto likely does not have a magnetic field to shield itself from the solar wind. If the Sun’s increased activity increases the solar wind then planets like Earth wouldn’t be effected as much.

New Horizons should have some instrumentation to answer that about the mag field. I would suspect Pluto does have a mag field while the atmosphere is in the gaseous phase.

I thought the warming was caused by the rings around Uranus.

Does anyone fear the sun might increase to a quasar? Is there any speculation there is a black hole somewhere?

Excuse my ignorance, I’m not knowledgeable about this stuff but it seems if the sun is becoming more active perhaps it could go as far as an explosion?

But I have faith in this forum for knowlegeable people in these areas. I’m constantly amazed at how much I learn here, so I thought I’d throw this out.

Not a chance. The sun is a variable star, so this means that the output of the sun will change by a small (for the sun) percentage. The sun is not massive enough to collapse into a black hole, only massive stars do that. These types of changes are perfectly normal for the sun, it has its 11 year cycle and 30-something year cycle (I think 36, but I am not too sure) that we have observed with sunspot activity over the past century, but there may be other, longer cycles that we just don’t know about, mainly because we haven’t been studying the sun for that long.

No. That's the solar wind

“Then as now, a buoyant market throve on fear. The Roman Catholic Church was a bank whose capital was secured by the infinite mercy of Christ, Mary and the Saints, and so the Pope could sell indulgences, like checks. The sinners established a line of credit against bad behavior and could go on sinning.”

Just as an aside, this is not what indulgences are or were (Amazingly, Wikapedia is quite accurate on this subject).

Well that’s a bit of info to digest, pretty interesting, thanks, and a relief to know. Sun cycles, hmm.

Also, I didn’t even realize that a sun (which has to be massive evidently) would collapse into a black hole, I thought the black hole came near it and pulled it in.

Newsmax may be reading too much into this.

Abstract
“Long-term photometric measurements of Neptune show variations of brightness over half a century. Seasonal change in Neptune’s atmosphere may partially explain a general rise in the long-term light curve, but cannot explain its detailed variations. This leads us to consider the possibility of solar-driven changes, i.e., changes incurred by innate solar variability perhaps coupled with changing seasonal insolation. Although correlations between Neptune’s brightness and Earth’s temperature anomaly—and between Neptune and two models of solar variability—are visually compelling, at this time they are not statistically significant due to the limited degrees of freedom of the various time series. Nevertheless, the striking similarity of the temporal patterns of variation should not be ignored simply because of low formal statistical significance. If changing brightnesses and temperatures of two different planets are correlated, then some planetary climate changes may be due to variations in the solar system environment.”

The whole black hole thing happens with a super massive body, but most of the “artist renditions” that you see with a black hole orbiting another star comes about from either theory or observations that most supermassive stars are part of a binary or trinary system, and the black hole is just eating up one of the companion stars. Or they may think that the astronomically high chances of a black hole randomly wandering near enough to a star could cause that, but what are the chances of that, really?

“How is it possible that the Earth’s temperature is so highly correlated with brightness variations from Neptune?

Because they are both related to a more active sun

See some basic Neptune atmospheric chemistry

Clouds (On Neptune) form this way: solar ultraviolet radiation destroys methane high in Neptune's atmosphere by converting it to hydrocarbons such as ethane, acetylene, and haze particles of more complex polymers. The haze particles freeze and become ice particles. These ice particles eventually fall into the warmer layers of the atmosphere, where they evaporate back into gases, mix with hydrogen gas and are reformed as methane. Methane clouds then rise high into the atmosphere.

This fits perfectly on how a more active sun would cause global warming on Neptune

What is happening is an increase in solar output will destroy more methane in the atmosphere which then freeze out of the atmosphere as more complex hydrocarbons, which will release heat (from solidification) thus warming the atmosphere. Then as these hydrocarbons sink they will react with hydrogen and reform into methane which will again release heat and warm up the atmosphere further. The newly created methane as it rises will form into clouds increasing Neptune's brightness, as the clouds disipate the cycle repeats with greater intensities, which = Global warming on Neptune kicked off by a more active sun.

The news from Neptune comes to us just weeks after an article was published showing that Mars has warmed recently as well.

Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Triton and Pluto are all showing signs of warming, with no body with an atmosphere that we know of is cooling or remaining stable*, so that's 7 out of 7 of our controls that are also heating up, only a warped Liberal mind can find that just one big coincidence.

* The only other bodies left with atmospheres are Venus and Titan, but in both cases their clouds are too thick to know what's going on one way or the other.

“The correlation between solar irradiance and Neptune’s brightness was nearly perfect; so was the correlation between changes on Earth and solar output,”
Exactly. The “Global Warming” movement has said that there was no connection between the sun’s brightness and the earth’s temperature. An obvious lie. This proves that they lied.

Well duh.

The blindingly obvious.

However, how many Enviro-wankers will go into the keening respone of “It’s all a government coverup” or “you must be funded by big oil”, and totally disregard the evidence?
