Deal On Immigration Bill Could Further Hurt McCain's Reputation With GOP Voters
cbsnews.com ^ | May 18, 2007 | — David Miller

Good news for John McCain: The Iraq war, for the moment, isn't the top political issue in the news.

Bad news for John McCain: It's been replaced by immigration. Thanks to a bill with his name on it — right next to Ted Kennedy's.

The deal ... may not become law, but even the chance of progress has left many conservatives incensed. The day after the deal, the web site of National Review... had no less than nine articles criticizing the legislation.

...

But there's a lot more here that could rankle conservatives who are already suspicious of McCain. The group of senators involved will resurrect memories of the "Gang of 14" that included McCain and subverted an effort in 2006 by Republican leaders in the Senate to end filibusters of judicial nominees. Nor will McCain win any votes for being on same side as Kennedy...

While McCain will be the candidate most directly affected by the deal, he won't be the only one to feel an impact. Rudy Giuliani has endorsed an immigration policy similar to that backed by McCain.

Who benefits? Probably Mitt Romney, who directly criticized the McCain-Kennedy bill in Monday’s GOP presidential candidate debate and said the deal struck on Thursday was "the wrong approach," adding that it "falls short of the actions needed to both solve our country's illegal immigration problem and also strengthen our legal immigration system."

And who's the most frustrated? We're guessing Reps. Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, who have been sounding the alarm to conservatives on immigration for years but will probably see their thunder stolen by Romney, a far more viable candidate.

What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.

Nope. It cannot. John McCain is deluding himself if he still thinks he has a snowball’s chance.

I was THROWN OUT OF JOHN McCAIN's OFFICE on this very issue.

McCain served his Country more than did John Kerry, but then, so did Benedict Arnold.

Illegal immigration and the border security is my top concern in my decision for 08 elections... that is the number one issue for me right now... McCain would never get my vote anyway...

The top tier has soiled their pants. McCain is a dead Presidential Candidate Walking. Rudy now has another issue that is close to the bases heart that he has to finesse and at some point folks are gonna get sick of nuance and demand some answers. Romney is smart, he came out against this crap immediately.

Duncan Hunter needs to take McCain on publically on this issue. This is no time to be timid, he can move McCain right out of the top tier and take his place as a legitimate candidate for POTUS. You listening Duncan? Take McCain on NOW!

We need a conservative who isn’t politically-correct; doesn’t care about polls; has the spine and moral fiber to stand up to Liberals and the MSM; and loves his country and respects our heritage. Anyone fit those qualifications?

Gee! Ya think? McCain's rep couldn't get much lower with conservatives, but he is somehow trying to drive it down further.

Run! Fred! Run!
