I didn't realize that we were supposed to defend Israel. Israel can defend itself against anyone save a nuclear Iran, which is a threat to the US as well.

That was the context of the article....if you even bothered to read it. Leaving Iraq is same as nuclear Iran scenario...by defeating Islamonazis in Iraq/Afghanistan we are DEFENDING Israel.

Look at Ronald Reagan. He didn't get elected by telling each particular crowd what they wanted to hear. He won by telling America what he believed. When the Iran Contra scandal broke, he didn't play games. He came out and said "I made mistakes, period". The result was that Americans supported him even more.
