Michelle Obama likes to razz her husband
Associated Press ^ | May 29, 2007 | Deanna Bellandi

Michelle Obama has a few gripes about her husband, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, and she's not shy about sharing them with thousands of people she doesn't know.

He doesn't put his worn socks in with the dirty clothes. He's worse than a 5-year-old at making the bed. And after he eats, he doesn't put away the butter.

"Today, he still didn't put the butter up after he made his breakfast. I was like, 'You're just asking for it, you know I'm giving a speech. Why don't you just put the butter up?'" she told a roaring crowd at a recent Chicago fundraiser for women backing her husband's campaign.

It's the sort of intimate ribbing that makes a famous person seem more regular, and observers say it helps humanize the first-term senator from Illinois who has shot to political stardom.

DePaul University marketing professor Bruce Newman, who has written several books on political marketing, sees the teasing as a strategy for Obama, through his wife, to appeal to professional women who might otherwise vote for one of his chief rivals for the nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

By joking about his domestic foibles, Michelle Obama is showing herself as a woman who doesn't kowtow to her husband, he said.

"It's a clever strategy. I think it's very wise," Newman said.

It might even earn him some points with men, said Harvard University's Thomas Patterson, a professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

I don’t take it as belittling. I don’t even take it as trying to get votes. Maybe it is, but then she is a very good actress. I just don’t see this as a big deal at all. So she has a sense of humor. So what! Doesn’t change the fact that her husband is a socialist.

I guess I don’t find it demeaning to put the butter away any more than my husband would find it demeaning to check the air in my tires. We are both capable, but if you split up the chorese....

Mr. M and I both cook although he does most of it now. If I use the butter, I put it away. He doesn’t eat butter. After 37 years, we work as a team. I used to whine about this or that but now, any word I say about him to anyone else is praise and thanksgiving. If there’s a problem, I look to myself and resolve my part in it, apologize to Mr. M and move on.

Depending on the racial makeup of the crowd, she can go from proper English to ebonics...sort of like The Beast and just as scary.

This is the kind of story our society has been reduced to.

I have had some experience with a spouse “sharing” in public. It is hurtful, and harmful...particularly for those who are engaged in dealing with that same audience. As a pastor, where your credibility and integrity is the main currency of your work, “sharing” can really undermine how others perceive you...and it makes your work a lot more difficult.

Ms. Obama's complaints about her hubby's sock balls and failure to put away the butter seems contrived.

Back in 1991 I remember seeing a photo essay in a Sunday suppliment magazine of a presidential candidate by the name of Bill Clinton. It showed Bill and Hillary on the lawn of the Governor's mansion, playing catch with their child. As I recall, mother and daughter were wearing matching baseball caps.

I know I am a male Chauvinist pig. But my wife cooks my breakfast and puts away the butter and makes the bed.

I cut the grass do the painting, repair the plumbing and wash the car.

Obama makes the bed? Bwahaha what a sissy.

See, the great thing about having a co-President is that there’s always someone to wear the pants in the family. I wonder if Obama’s boss has cankles?

Mrs. Obama razzes her husband?!? I always thought that was written into the unspoken part of the marriage vows anyway!

Mr. MortMan, surely you jest? Lots of humour around, but deliver me from the babbling spouse. Ms. Obama should be telling us that hubby is clean and articulate.

Yes that was horrible and not funny at all. What a racist she is. Still, the other stuff about the butter is funny.

Thanks for the video link. She came across very badly in that clip. Yuck!
