Social conservatives bite bullet, back Rudy [his backers pray]
Politico ^ | May 28, 2007 | David Paul Kuhn

Rudy Giuliani, whose positions on abortion and homosexuality mark him as the most socially liberal Republican presidential candidate in more than a generation, is so far winning the contest for the support of social conservatives, according to a new analysis of recent polls.

Widespread perceptions that Giuliani is the most electable Republican in this year's field are driving his support among social conservatives, according to the analysis by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

If the trend holds, this apparent willingness to support a candidate who fails what were once regarded as litmus-test issues would mark a landmark shift in the political behavior of a constituency that has been a pillar of the modern GOP. Already the shift is spurring sharp debate among prominent Christian conservative leaders, some of whom warn that Giuliani backers are abandoning core principles.

Exactly! They want a prez to do what is the Church’s responsibility. The Church has taken a back seat yet has no problem dictating ‘core principles’ regarding social issues for some else. If the members of the Christian Church had been doing their job all along - there would be very few abortions. But then, again, there are many ‘liberal’ churches. Now, in Canada, preachers are forbidden to speak out about homosexuality. Government wants to be our church and it’s been allowed.

No, they do not.

I will support him if he is the Republic's only nominee against Clinton/Hussein.

I'm still waiting for another patriot to declare, but for now Duncan Hunter has my vote.

To be an actual ‘fiscal’ conservative one is naturally a social conservative. Social liberals are not fiscally conservative.

I know the positions I will never ever support and that is very important.

Care to share with the rest of the class?

Why do you think we are out of our minds for not wanting to vote for a liberal who says he is a conservative to get votes but has proven time and time again that he is not one? I will not support someone just because he says he has an R after his name. This country is too important for that to happen.

We haven’t had a real conservative since Reagan.

Pity Romney is a Mormon, or he would be leading by 10-20. And when does ‘Law and Order’ end? Fred needs to get in, ASAP.

So when Hillary appoints Ruth Bader Ginberg’s three socialist sisters during the next 8 years, how does that help your cause?

Less harm would be done allowing Hildabeast to be elected than electing a pro-abortionist......

That is the dumbest statement that has been trotted over this forum - unless one is truly ignorant of her. It's a feel good statement - 'my way or forget it'.

I will not support someone who wants to take guns away.
I will not support someone who wants to take innocent life and make the tax payer pay for it.
I will not support someone who is for open borders.
I will not support someone who does not take family values seriously.
I will not support anyone who supports gay marriages, etc.

The WOT is important but without the others, just what kind of country would we have?

My ancestors or at least the ones I have been able to trace have been here since the 1600’s. They and the ones who came after them made this country what it is today or at least what it is supposed to be—the land of the free. I do not take their sacrifices lightly.

Does this give you an idea?

No, they do not.

Right you are. Rudy is the darling of the "character doesn't matter" wing of the party.

He is running, which is a bit more than I can say for Fred Thompson.
