You’re so right. I’m sitting here with my 12 year old daughter showing her all the perverts in our neighborhood from the Watchdog.com site.
When I was 12, I was trying to figure out how to keep my Grandma from figuring out that I was too old to play with the “Chatty Kathy” doll she gave me for Christmas.
I’ll bet your heart just drops when you read stories like this, as does mine. It’s a sad day when you have to teach your children not to trust anybody without scaring them too much.
Yep. And kids aren't going to think of that angle because they don't know any better. A predator may have lived in a town for 20 years, but never acted out because public stalking behavior is too risky. Now these freaks can stalk from the privacy of their own homes, and appear in a public place only long enough to snatch the predetermined victim. Plus, the pool of stalkers has expanded out to as far as they are willing to drive.
I've explained this stuff to my kids, and I think it has really helped curtail the teen tendency of "knowing" everything about the world. They realize that the world can be a weird, hostile place and mom's knowledge is very useful. They don't care much for the internet anyway, as they have better things to do.
That about happened to a friend of mine........just today. Long story.
She was 18. That is the age to wear the short shorts and tops. Usually you see the old ladies wearing them! I don’t think that is the answer. The death penalty is the answer.
Buy her a gun and train her how to use it.

My sister and her family live 10 minutes from there and when my niece visits from NY, she loves shopping at that Target. It’s quite frightening that she could have been the victim had she been there at the same time as Kelsey.
But, it is frightening this happened in the suburbs.
Yeah, I was just there tonight, at about the same time --a little after 7.
The Target is the closest to my house and my daughter needed some toiletries. I also wanted to get a feel for the place. It was not intentional, but we got there at 7:25PM. Similar lighting and I’m guessing a similar crowd, probably less though than last Saturday. It was eerie, people coming and going, looking around. It was hard to comprehend the evil that took place there, at a typical suburban discount store.
Frankly, I don’t know how this happen, I just cant believe it was totally random. My theory is that some obscure connection will come out. I believe the sicko was staking her, or obsessed with her some way, and she nor her family had any ideal. I also can't believe no one in the parking lot did not see it.
This is just too weird.
They will find the right guy and Phil will get him death which is more merciful than what he deserves. I don't know how any change in venue or defense tricks can save him no matter where in Kansas he is tried.
It is horrible. There is no motive here. How could there be a motive. She wasnt rich, I am sure she didnt have over 60 dollars on her, if that. There was nothing to gain by killing her. I am sure she didnt do anything to ruin the life of the killer and make him mad. She was just a beautiful 18 year old who did nothing to deserve such a terrible ending to life.
This case really gets to me. She is the exact same age as my g/f Donna. and I must say, she kind of resembles her. It is just terrible,

When I was 18, a 200+ pound man waited for me in a Tom Thumb parking lot in South Dallas on Hawn FWY for 4 hours for me to get off work because he was angry. I closed my lane as ordered by my supervisor who took my cash box from the register. The man stated I will check him out or I will be sorry. I could not without a cash box.
He attacked me as I was walking to my car. Being naive, it did not occur to me that I would be slain. I thought he was going to beat me. I fought like a wildcat. There was no way he was getting me into that car. He gave up after realizing I wasn’t going easily, then slung me onto the loose, gravel parking lot of which I still have a scar where a rock embedded into my wrist. There was no way he was going to get me into that car.
I reported the incident to the store, but the police were not called. The manager walked me to my car to ensure I was able to leave safely. Thankfully, we handle such incidents much better these days.
I see that video and know the terror that Kelsey felt. I am sick at heart that her ending didn’t end as mine. Still naive 30 years later, I thought she was coming home. I am devastated for Kelsey and her family.
That is horrible. The way a woman dresses has nothing to do with this. Dont be such a miserable coward.

I would agree that wearing something very offensive in public is wrong.
But wearing a tank tops and shorts is not a problem. My girlfriend wears comfortable shorter shorts and shorts that show her figure well. There is NOTHING wrong with that. NOTHING.
That's where you wrong, but I will try to divorce this from whatever the victim was wearing, because that is irrelevant. She shouldn't have been murdered. When women wear revealing clothing, it says "treat me like an object."
Thanks for the link. I had been trying for years to tell parents, people at my church about the dangers of the internet (this was back in '95) people laughed at me and told me that I didn't trust my kids.
Now they have programs like Dateline's To Catch a Predator. I guess I wasn't crazy after all.
I know this case must really hit you hard OYC, because of your age and that of your girlfriend. This is why I said, “Be careful in Cinci”. There are always predators out there. It’s no different than a jungle these days.
From what my kids tell me, these young girls will go on myspace (not saying that Kelsey did) and divulge all kind of information such as “I’m going shopping at —— right now, be back later!”
All parents should be discussing this with their children, as you have.
