Fred Thompson Seeks $4.6 Million
NewsMax ^ | June 6, 2007

Supporters of Fred Thompson are seeking to raise $4.6 million to help launch the former senator and "Law & Order” star’s expected run for president in 2008.

A group called the First-Day Founders got the ball rolling when all 100 members each donated the primary maximum of $2,300 on June 1, the day Thompson’s exploratory committee filed with the Tennessee secretary of state, allowing the committee to begin fundraising.

If the First-Day Founders come through with their fundraising efforts, "Thompson presumably would start off with $4.6 million in ‘seed money,’” The Hill newspaper reported.

"Speculation has been rampant as of late that the former senator is all but in the race … and such aggressive fundraising efforts seem to support that notion.”

Some analysts believe that Thompson will not announce his candidacy before the end of the second filing period because he might appear financially weak compared to candidates who have had more time to raise money, according to The Hill.

In addition to the First-Day Founders, several Web sites that were formed to urge a Thompson run have been raising money as well. GrassrootsVoter.com claims it has signed 17,000 volunteers from all 50 states, and www.Fred08.com is also asking for donations.

I worked for President Ronald Reagan (as a low-level intelligence analyst). I see some resemblance here, but no person is that much like another. Senator/President Thompson will make his own legacy, but I’ll bet he will be a great president like RWR.

Unfortunately there are way too many Giuliani and Romney supporters on here.

On the same note, there are also way too many who are married to fringe candidates that don't stand a snowballs chance in hell... I am not saying they shouldn't support them, but the attitude that if your fringe candidate (eg Tancredo, Paul, etc) isn't chosen, you'll sit out, is just as bad as supporting McFruity RINOS..

Someone will need to explain why a term and a half senator with a mediocre (at best) record deserves to be seen as the great conservative hope.

Do you want a gun grabber like Giuliani or Romney in the White House? They are both slick Northeastern liberals. McCain is tanking and not that great. Every other declared candidate is a one or two percenter. Thompson is in the top tier without even declaring. So those are the realistic choices. Which of those four do you want to see in the Oval Office in 2009?

What a coincidence, I’m also seeking $4.6M.

These positive stories about Fred Thompson are like Rudy McRomney & the 7 dwarves supporters flypaper (”Fred’s not Ronald Reagan” “he’s a neocon globalist/moderate/lobbyist/actor”, “Rudy’s the only one that can beat Hillary”, “Ron Paul is the only one telling the truth”, etc, etc...).

No crap, Dick Tracy. Last I heard, RR isn’t exactly around to be President again. That being said, FDT looks like the best option for people who support Reaganist politics.

Sorry to any Hunter-trons, Tancredamatics, Huckabots, et. al. out there, but candidates have to be VIABLE. Your guys haven’t shown themselves to be so. In fact, quite the opposite. And the Paulists? A mental hospital.. its something worth considering.

Viables:
Giuliani
Romney
Thompson.

Of these, pick your best choice and start preparing for the REAL fight against HilObamWards.

A rigorous primary season that tests candidates is great, but we really really DON’T want to exhaust ourselves or our finances to have one. Of the above, I’m generally cool with either Romney or Thompson. Prefer Thompson on guns and Constitution issues, though.

184,000 donations of $25 meets that goal.

Come on now, Arthur Branch while DA of New York County had brought the crime rate down in NYC dramatically. America, needs a tough NYC prosecutor to serve as president. And he can even name Jack McCoy as Attorney General

I dunno, but it seems to be what the Dems are banking on as well, judging by their top three. There seems to be a lot of Congress Critters in the race this time.

Careful what you wish for. "In 1983, Giuliani was appointed US Attorney for the Southern District of New York..."

Did I really need to put a Sarcasm Tag on that post?

Not only was I trying to be sarcastic, but also ironic. One guy running used to be a prosecutor and another guy plays one on TV.

Irony, Yes. However, I would rather have the Actor than the actual former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Actually, I would rather have Hillary than Rudy. At Least with Hillary in office the GOP will not be pulled to the far left of the current political spectrum.

I believe that once Fred is officially in the race and debates are held that many Giuliani and Romney supporters may turn towards Fred. I do not dislike Guiliani as a person at all, but will not vote for him. Romney I also like, and would support him if I wasn’t supporting Duncan Hunter. I love Hunter but realize he just does not have a chance this time around. I will be supporting Fred and hope that he chooses Hunter as VP or at least AG!
