Britain launches nuclear sub that can hear a ship from across the Atlantic

The first of the UK's new generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines has been unveiled in Cumbria by the Duchess of Cornwall.

Due to enter service in 2009, BAE Systems' Astute is the most advanced submarine of its kind and comes bristling with the very latest in military technology.

BAE said: "With a radar signature equivalent to a dolphin, it can remain undetected thousands of miles from home and hundreds of metres underwater.

"In the right conditions it can detect the QE2 leaving New York harbour from the English Channel."

its key asset is its stealth. Even with a nuclear reactor and four powerful turbines propelling it through the water, less than one watt of power is radiated, making it incredibly quiet.

Its nuclear reactor means that it will never need to be refuelled in its 25-year lifetime.

The submarine - almost half as big again as the Royal Navy's current fleet of attack boats - is one of three under construction at the BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness.

Something like fifty wheels under it. The ones we had used tracks, but we had gravel roads to start with or they would have been gravel roads afterwards anyway.

“With a radar signature equivalent to a dolphin...”

I’m a little confused by this statement. What relevance is a radar signature when a submarine remains underwater?

I’m sure the subs will serve Allah well.

Britain. 3% Muslim.

America: 3% Muslim.

We are free citizens and we have guns.
They are subjects and are unarmed (except for criminals and muslims)

I'm pretty sure 90 days is the limit due to food.

And maybe TP.

Unless, of course, they are ordered to listen to Sheryl Crowe.

I remember reading one article about the then-new LA class boats. They would leave port with food packages stacked all over the place.

The writer is goofed up - Sonar is underwater measure of stealth.

(Though radio masts and periscopes that are above water are treated with RAM coatings to reduce radar reflections.)

Cool! Now how about some nuclear power for us civilians.

How would it be able to hear one particular ship across the Atlantic without telling all the other ships to be quiet?

The one sub gives the other ships a dirty look and they all know to keep quiet.

This is based on the "Librarian" rule.

You think with all that duct tape holding it together, it’d create a bit more sonar signature...

The QE2 is an extremely noisy ship?

‘We are free citizens and we have guns.’

So are we and we also have guns. I have three guns, so I must be extra-free. Every Iraqi has a gun so they must be the free-est. We’ve been free since 1215 when the Magna Carta was signed. 560 years later one of our colonies decided being free was good too and copied our Magna Carta. I think they called it the ‘constipation’ or something similar. It was good, but they kept amending it until no-one took it seriously anymore.

‘They are subjects and are unarmed (except for criminals and muslims)’

No, I think you’ll find we’re still citizens - have been for a long time. All my friends have guns and we hunt regularly with them. You must be thinking of NYC. It’s much easier for your muslims to get a gun than for our muslims to. AS you all have guns can you explain to me how 911 happened without the hi-jackers getting shot? ;-)
