NEWTON, Iowa (AP) -- Republican presidential hopeful John McCain said Saturday that time is running out on overhauling immigration policy. "We've got other things to do in the Senate," McCain told reporters. "Hopefully we can come to an agreement, but in all candor -- a little straight talk -- time is not on our side."
McCain also challenged opponents of the plan to step up.
"The status quo is de facto amnesty -- fact," the Arizona senator said. "So for us to do nothing and celebrate the fact that we stopped this legislation, well then those who have a better idea can give it to us. We can consider it and move forward."
He spoke after a town hall event in Newton, where immigration dominated discussion and McCain spent much time defending the stalled proposal. Opponents of the legislation, he said, are not listening to the public.

“Time is running out,” dear Senator McCain. On your campaign.

Build the fence. Go after employers who hire illegals.
He is busy digging his campaign’s grave. That’s great news.
The status quo wouldn’t be defacto amnesty IF THE GOVERNMENT DID ITS DAMN JOB AND ENFORCED THE LAW. Beware: This is their new talking point, a phrase we will hear over and over again in the coming days. It is NOT TRUE. DOES NOT REFLECT REALITY. All the pro-bill people are both sides already are using it. I heard it eight times this morning, already. The REAL status quo is ignoring the law.
I have an idea. How can we possible consider amnesty when Mexico “offically” won’t back us on the war with Iraq. Mexico joined the ranks of Iran, Cuba, Saudi Arabia on the vote.
I suppose they could try enforcing the law.
Time is running out, dear Senator McCain. On your campaign.
Hey Johnny, nobody is forcing the illegals to stay here.
Why don’t you start using that bus of yours “The Straight Jacket Express”
to haul them back from whence they came?
Build a fence then deport the illegals!!
I have an idea. How about ENFORCING the laws we already have instead of making a bunch of NEW laws that, like the old laws will NOT be enforced.
“I suppose they could try enforcing the law.”
They could build the fence
Go to bed , old man.
This proves that these elitist scum think the electorate are morons.
It’s like a small house fire with no water and a small can of gasoline nearby. “If we do nothing the house will burn down. But fortunately we have this can of gasoline ....”
McSTAIN!
The the people have told you the bill they want!
Seal the Border FIRST!
End Birth Rightg Citenship to end Anchor Babies!
Fine and Fine Heavy employers of illegals!
SLAP any sanctuary city or state HARD!
Make English the ONLY language allowed for ANY Ballot, governmental form or action, MANDATE PROOF of U.S Citizenship to cast ANY ballot from the local level up through federal.
Then you can bring parts of the current bill back up.
The fact is, after being a traitor for 20 years, McCain wants to make the invasion a complete defeat for America, by surrendering to the invaders.
Remember when sworn oaths used to mean something? I guess not to traitors.
U.S. Constitution, Article 4 Section 4:
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
There will never be amnesty if we as US citizens bear the responsibility our leaders are shirking.
Are we going to offer words and contentious words as out leaders are offering or are we going to be responsible?
