Snow: Bush Not Giving Up on Immigration

Snow: Bush Not Giving Up on Immigration Jun 10 01:39 PM US/Eastern By HOPE YEN Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush is not giving up on his plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants and will seek to convince skeptical GOP senators that it secures the nation's borders, administration officials said Sunday.

But the Senate's No. 2 Democratic leader said he was uncertain about the prospects for a deal. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois cited opposition from a group of Senate conservatives who contend the legislation guarantees amnesty to illegal immigrants.

"We need a breakthrough on the Republican side," Durbin said.

Tony Snow, White House spokesman, and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez both predicted an immigration bill would pass once Bush meets with lawmakers this week and Congress reconsidered the measure.

Snow said Bush planned to listen to senators' concerns when he meets with GOP senators for a scheduled lunch Tuesday. Bush has been placing phone calls to Republican senators from Air Force One during a European trip.

"I think one of the things you do in this is you listen," said Snow, when asked what Bush planned to say. "And I think one of the concerns a lot of people have, at least around the country, is they say, 'Look, how can we trust you guys to enforce this? You had a border that's been open for 21 years. How can we trust you?'"

"If you take a look at the bill, it is the largest investment ever in border security," he said.

" Perhaps Tony is working to fix the problem behind the scenes, and indeed essentially said so today."

I'll be waiting to see the proof - but I'm not holding my breath while I wait.

Bush always talked admiringly of the contributions Hispanics had made to the economy and culture of Texas, but he also steadfastly maintained that he was against amnesty for illegals. Of course, he never bothered to define amnesty, and those of us who voted for him twice took him at his word. Silly us.

I never thought that I would have to parse this President’s words the way I parsed Bill Clinton’s. But, sadly, it’s necessary, and for the same reason. When Bush says this isn’t amnesty, he’s lying. And he knows it.

Tony, we love ya, but tell your boss that the GOP base is seeking a divorce from him.

This is not over yet. Bush refuses to give up this easily. It's his stuborn character. He will try to resurect it and call it something else. We have to keep our guard up. We need to keep the pressure up.

STAGE TWO is to go after the people who hire illegals. Start giving them fines and arresting them. Just catch ten or 100 of them on the nightly news. The magnet will dry up and most of the 12 million will go home by themselves.

As an adendum, we should anonymously call the IRS, people working "off the books" means taxes ain't being paid. Make anonymous fliers and hang them around the neighborhood, name names. It's time to embarras these bustards, whether they give to the GOP or Rats, we don't need them.

STOP AMNESTY NOW!! WE CAN DO IT!!

CALL! CALL! CALL! CALL! AND KEEP CALLING TILL THE LINES FRY!

WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! WRITE! TILL YOU RUN OUT OF INK IN YOUR PEN!

Bombard the Democrats as well, especially the ones that ran on an anti illegal immigration plank and the ones in marginal districts who could be vulnerable. keep pounding on them. This is a bipartisan issue not a Conservative or Liberal issue BUT AN AMERICAN issue.

If Tony Snow does read this Bush bashing thread, I hope he gets as far as my post. Tony, you look great and it was good to see you on with Chris Wallace this morning. I believe you are representing Pres Bush honestly and without mental anguish in doing so. Blessings for you and your family.

A good example of why we must pay close attention not just to people’s stated positions on the precise questions (like “amnesty”), but to their general, less scripted comments on immigration as a social trend — and on related issues. What they feel about issues often comes out, and often contradicts their stated position when asked directly about a given policy.

If he [Tony Snow] were an honorable man, he would leave the President’s service and state clearly that he had a disagreement with the positions he has had to defend, and his beliefs are elsewhere.

Anyone who doubts the corrupting influence of political life in D.C. has only to look here for an example. What surprised me was how quickly he turned.

The wayfarer,
Perceiving the pathway to truth,
Was struck with astonishment.
It was thickly grown with weeds.
"Ha," he said,
"I see that none has passed here
In a long time."
Later he saw that each weed
Was a singular knife.
"Well," he mumbled at last,
"Doubtless there are other roads."

Bush gives up on General Pace, not wanting another political fight. But he sure doesn’t mind a political fight for a horrible immigration bill. Priceless.

Just FYI...

those of us who listened to Tony everyday BEFORE he got the gig at the WH....know he was ALWAYS in favor of this crud....

one of the reasons he got the dern job...

Love Tony as a person— but do not respect him as an American...

You are correct. I remember listening to his radio show and wanting to dive into the radio. He was a big supporter of giving citizenship to anyone who makes it here. He is a believer with Bush so don't expect Tony to change, ain’t gonna happen.
