It's indicative of how very badly President Bush needs a victory any victory that he plans to make a rare trip to Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon to attend a weekly Republican luncheon. There, he will make a personal appeal to senators on behalf of his bipartisan immigration reform bill, the progress of which came to a sudden and surprising halt late Thursday night after a failed attempt to bring the legislation to a vote.
While Bush has previously leaned on Vice President Cheney to make these kinds of congressional entreaties (the President last sat in on a Senate policy lunch in 2002), either Bush's desperation or the VP's lack of enthusiasm for the measure or quite possibly both has forced his hand.

Good Luck.
I wonder what he will offer Chambliss and Iisakason from Georgia?
Call your Senators and Representative!! Let their staff know that no one who votes for shamnesty gets our votes, ever again!!
“This issue is much larger than any party.....”
BINGO!!! IMHO this is about world moneyed interests trying to subdue the will of the American people to their own ends.....
I’m no longer defending Bush to anyone. This is the last straw for me.
If Bush is really serious about getting this crap passed and wanted Cheney to be his go to boy on this, I hope Cheney told Bush to pound sand!
I wish Bush would put this much effort into his own countrymen, rather than illegals who will destroy his partys chances of ever getting elected again.
Who swiped his Meds? He is really out of touch.
“..hes gonna burn the house down after he walks away.”
What a promising candidate he once was. I can still remember Rush Limbaugh interviewing him and Cheney one afternoon in 2000 and how Rush commented that GW could become the greatest president of this generation. Those were heady days. What a pitiful figure he has become.
“Gotta wonder who his masters are that ordered him to go back and get it right.”
I was made to believe that the POTUS was the most powerful person in the world, and that he had no masters. I guess I was wrong.
“..the kind of culture that he prefers.”
He prefers that culture for you and me; not for himself or his family.
Fat chance of changing Martinez’s mind! LOL
We’ve got to call and write just as hard as we did last week or the pro-criminal axis will cram the Bush-Kennedy amnesty down our throats.
Not defending him either. My two Senators Inhofe and Coburn are totally opposed to this bill. Why won’t the President consider Sen Inhofe’s ENFORCE bill which definitely does not include amnesty? It is in judiciary and probably not going to see the light of day — makes sense, is short and to the point.
ENFORCE the laws on the books — writing such a large bill is ridiculous and should be filed in the trash!
If the idiot gets his way and gets a “win” on this bill, all current LEGAL US CITIZENS are the true losers.
What is a matter with him? This is killing the party!
...and move to his new 90,000 acre ranch in Paraguay.
Has anyone provided any statistics on how much federal $$$$ Texas and Florida would receive in order to implement this?
My guess is that California, Texas and Florida stand to get a boatload of free money if this is passed.
The longer this goes on the smellier it gets.
Yours is an important post.
Even if you all have written your stumblebum, write again, call again.
If you figure out the answer, please advise because I don’t understand it.
