Bush Tries to Save Immigration Bill
Time Magazine ^ | Jun. 11, 2007 | Gilbert Cruz

It's indicative of how very badly President Bush needs a victory — any victory — that he plans to make a rare trip to Capitol Hill Tuesday afternoon to attend a weekly Republican luncheon. There, he will make a personal appeal to senators on behalf of his bipartisan immigration reform bill, the progress of which came to a sudden and surprising halt late Thursday night after a failed attempt to bring the legislation to a vote.

While Bush has previously leaned on Vice President Cheney to make these kinds of congressional entreaties (the President last sat in on a Senate policy lunch in 2002), either Bush's desperation or the VP's lack of enthusiasm for the measure — or quite possibly both — has forced his hand.

The POTUS might actually stand a halfway decent chance of leaving a “decent” legacy.....if he would side with Americans...instead of illegals.

He knows his popularity is at about the sewer level...so I think he’s just figures he’s gonna burn the house down after he walks away.

VP is sitting out the latest Bush stupid venture ... At least some have a sibilance of party left in the White House. I suppose we can say the Veep doesn’t lie, but POTUS, he is beginning to have a big problem with the truth.

To try and tell people this ANMESTY bill is not AMNESTY, is just silly on it’s face, and a bald face lie in fact.

Gotta wonder who his masters are that ordered him to go back and get it right. And this time, grovel and walk across the street to get it done personally.

This issue is much larger than any party. The "party" will mean nothing after the country is destroyed.

Terrorists don't care about Republicans or Democrats. When are people going to understand this?

“”Regardless of whether it was division in the Senate, the way that Bush’s typically loyal conservative base sparked a movement against the bill by harping on the word “amnesty, “ or the fact that he was unable to personally lobby for the bill last week (as he was out of the country at the G—8 summit)””

Time mage liberal snark, couldn’t imagine opponents have read the bill and oppose it for substantial reasons.

Attention to those who have Pub Senators who could flip on this issue.Drop them an e-mail TONIGHT reminding them who they really work for (you) before our charming El Presidente gets to make his crappy pitch for the Kennedy-McCain-Bush banana bill !!!

This isn't about winning a victory for the sake of it, from the day Bush got into office amnesty was at the top if his agenda. He is obsessed with the country south of the border and is attempting to force onto the rest of us the kind of culture that he prefers.

Does anyone have the # to the WH handy? Time to light up the phone lines. I’m sick of listening to the President on this.

Well, hopefully Cheney has enough integrity not to pimp for Bush/Kennedys’ amnesty. Got to be someone in there with brains.

Now if only Bush would work half as hard for his own people or even the Repub Party as he does for the Dems.

They won’t take a message at the WH #. Have to call during business hours. Calling tomorrow first thing. I’m fed up with the pres trying to jam this down our throats. That’s my comment for them. If they wish elaboration, i’ll be happy to do so.
