Islamberg: A Terror Compound in New York ... or Misunderstood Neighbors?
Fox News ^ | June 12, 2007 | Michael Y. Park

DEPOSIT, N.Y. — Hidden in a remote area off a primitive dirt road lies a mysterious 70-acre compound in which more than 100 Muslims live in seclusion, following the teachings of its founder, a radical cleric with alleged ties to terrorism.

It's neither a Taliban stronghold outside Jalalabad, nor an extremist madrassa on the outskirts of Karachi.

It's a place called Islamberg, a closed and seemingly quiet community at the foot of the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, about three hours north of Manhattan.

It's also a compound shrouded in local rumors, mystery — and fear — sitting near the huge reservoir system that provides New York City with most of its drinking water.

Quietly nestled in the woods, Islamberg remained unnoticed for the two decades leading up to Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked by a determined band of Islamic extremists.

That’s when people started questioning the community’s ties to a Pakistani cleric allegedly connected to worldwide terrorism. They also started talking about the unusual sounds of gunfire and explosions some said they heard emanating from the compound.

it smacks of compassion, as in compassionate conservatism, and TOLERANCE.

That's exactly the source of the problem. Mr Compassionate Conservatism repeats the phrase Religion of Peace.

And don't forget the influence of Grover Norquist, Islam's agent of influence in the conservative influence.

Wanna bet most of them are here on expired student visas? You know ICE, DOD, or NHS can’t be bothered to check them out.

No, most of them are from the Bronx. These are black Americans, many of whom "embraced" islam behind bars. In the sixties they would have been Panthers, and should suffer the same fate.

I have zero doubt that there are LEO ringers in their midst.

Was the assault weapons ban renewed?

I’ve already gotten my NRA cert. for basic pistol, so I’m gonna work on getting the permit and CC for the state of CT. Next I’ll try working on NY state and then NYC.

By the time I get a CC for NYC, I’ll be 70 years old.

Oh, not the expired visa type but the homegrown variety. There's so many it's hard to keep them all straight.

San Diego has a huge moslem population. Mosques are going up - and/or churches are being turned into mosques.

Two blocks from my house is the apartment building and mosque where the hijackers lived who flew into the Pentagon.

Even the public elementary schools - as Rodger Hedgecock said on Rush’s show - are bringing in people to teach the children moslem prayers. The schools are segregating by gender.

Our tax dollars are paying for this.

And about Islam in South America - that is true - it is a growing presence.

Meanwhile most of America is concerned with Paris Hilton ....

slamberg's elders refused a request to visit with them and tour the compound, citing a recent spate of negative publicity. For now, it remains an enigma in the mountains.

Nice to know they don't allow anyone inside. (/s)

It's hard to say whether these are hard-core terrorist muzzies or not. As the article explains, there has been some problems with the group, but they've also helped out the local community when in need, as they did after the area was flooded last year.

I grew up in Binghamton, about 30 minutes west of Deposit. I remember hearing about the group on occasion, but nobody really made a big deal about it.
