WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.

``We're going to show the American people that the promises in this bill will be kept,'' Bush said in a speech to the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Bush got behind a proposal to set aside money collected through fees and penalties for tougher border security and workplace enforcement. Two Republican senators, John Kyl of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.

Bush said the measure would ``show the American people that we're going to do our jobs of securing this border once and for all.''

The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.

“This time I really mean it!” - George Bush

Bush said the 4-5 billion for “increased enforcement” to come from fines paid by illegal aliens

Bush sounds like Teddy Kennedy again!

Rush just said “Trust them? We don’t believe them!”

“We voted him into office twice, knowing this.”

No, you voted him in. We got stuck with him.

It has taken six years for rank and file Republicans to wake up and smell the coffee. For those of us already awake, it has been like watching a train wreck in slow motion.

You have a heckuva point.

There's not a REASON in the world that a simple bill can't be put on the hill calling for and funding the wall, border patrol and the technology to secure the border, all by itself.

It doesn't HAVE to be wrapped up in this pile of ... well, glop.

They WANT it hidden in this 800 page pile of glop, the better to hide all the other deceptive stuff in that bill.

The Republican winner in 08 will be the candidate who runs as the anti-Bush.

Then you can blame the Republicrat party for that, not conservatives.

I'm tired of that noise.

Bush Pledges Tougher Border Security

Lets see, this guy has been in office about 2,500 days and since he's been in office about 15,000,000 more illegal aliens and entered this country, while he did everything he could to encourage it.

And now he speaks of border security?

How stupid are we?

Exactly. Don’t tell us what you’re “going” to do, just do it. Then after about 10 years, we’ll see if you really did it and did it right. Perhaps then we can consider other immigration measures.

So even if you're correct that we knew or should have known that Bush was going to try to destroy America, now that's he actually doing it, we should just sit back and let it happen?

Anyone that believes that really hates America.

The alternative was Gore or Kerry. The choice just wasn’t there.
You are right. President Bush follows through on his intentions. It is one of his best traits.
He might even mean this stuff about border security (assuming it isn’t cleaned out of the bill during reconciliation...).

He should let his actions match his words since his pledges mean little here. Let him enforce existing immigration laws strictly for a few years, then the new president and congress can see about improving the laws if need be.

If he did the above, the Republicans would sweep into power again come 2008. If not, the public will continue to despise the whole lot of them.

President Bush had better hope that Patrick Fitzgerald, Henry Waxman, or other enemies find nothing on which he could be subject to impeachment. A lot of people will not resist a liberal attempt to take him down, letting him twist slowly, slowly in the wind, especially in light of his vigorous support for amnesty.

It seems like that would be the best thing that could happen to this country. Bush would have spend all of energy trying to save his butt that he wouldn't be able to destroy the country any further.

But, before ‘08 even gets here, we may have to deal with Hamas in the Gaza Strip and confront Iran on nukes. If the Middle East, Israel in particular, ignites this summer, it’ll make the immigration issue pale by comparison.

That is BS. There is NOTHING bigger than this bill and that includes Iraq. The passing of this bill will destroy this country and none of those other things you mentioned will matter one bit.

Look at what happened to Yugoslavia. The balkanization of this country is the #1 issue facing this country.

Rush just said “Trust them? We don’t believe them!”

What is Rush's take on all of this? Specially in regard to Bush and Lott.

In the past he has been troubled by the actions of the whitehouse but then the next day he would say that after thinking about it, it's not as bad as it seems and is actually good strategy (i.e. "taking an issue away from the democrats").

I stopped listening to Rush about that time because he had turned into a party cheerleader rather than a conservative commentator.

Have things changed?
