WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush, trying to salvage an immigration overhaul legislation, endorsed a plan Thursday that would lock in money for border security as way to win over conservative lawmakers and a skeptical public.

``We're going to show the American people that the promises in this bill will be kept,'' Bush said in a speech to the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Bush got behind a proposal to set aside money collected through fees and penalties for tougher border security and workplace enforcement. Two Republican senators, John Kyl of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.

Bush said the measure would ``show the American people that we're going to do our jobs of securing this border once and for all.''

The provision would immediately divert $4.4 billion toward border security, with that amount to be paid back once new fees are in place. The point would be to ensure that border security would not be subject to the whims of the yearly budget negotiations.

W. has jumped the shark. It happened, for me, when I realized that my response to this thread was “I don’t believe you, Mr. President”.

Sure, Bush has made lots of pledges and pledges like promises are made to be broken. Sorry I no longer trust or believe this administration and find that I must now rethink my past support.

This is about as good as the time they proposed offering $100 checks to taxpayers to "compensate" for higher gasoline prices.

To hell with Bush and to hell with the incumbents.

John Kyl of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, have proposed such an amendment.

It appears to be an amendment to the bill itself.
This is the first time I've seen any indication of how they planned to spend the $60 billion+ the bill could raise.

I voted for him twice.

I don’t believe him on this issue. He has zero credibility, and after listening to Laura Ingraham rip Tony Snow apart this morning, neither does Tony.

"Going to." Always future tense.

WTF have you been doing for the last six years, a$$hole?!?!

We'll talk about amnesty once you "have been" securing the border.

Bush addresses the Associated Builders and Contractors. Builders and contractors are the biggest abusers of illegal immigrant employment. Why doesn’t Bush address common American citizens for a change?

Promise the money, promise us the moon, but nothing changes until the American public sees real enforcement. No mas smoke and mirrors!

We don’t need no stinking Constitution, Bill “o” Rights, walls, mandatory English language, etc. in MexAmeriCanada.

Get used to it. So much more will be going by way of forced oral entry.

As Clinton said...”put some ice on it”. Now, it is Bush’s turn.

A few questions to ask your senators..who is going to pay for the new schools and jails that will be needed if they allow the extended families to come in. 6% of any population will need to be incarcerated in state prisons...who is going to pay for new ones, which we already have a problem with overcrowding now. What are they going to do about all the fraudlent documents the current corp of illegals are using?

And have they stripped the provisions that will allow convicted illegal alien felons to remain in the US?

Who is going to pay for the welfare, food stamps and medic-aid these extended family members are going to demand?

We the US Citizens is who.

B.S., Mr. President. If you’re so committed to securing the borders, why not do that FIRST without any strings attached???

I am completely disillusioned with this man and this party’s elites.

“Why doesn’t Bush address common American citizens for a change?”
I’m glad you asked:
Because Rasmussen, Pew and every other poll in our solar system consistently shows that the average American would rather chew sand than get on board his amnesty amor train.
He knows he’d be wasting his breath.
