CA: New diet drug touches off a feeding frenzy
Los Angeles Times ^ | 6/15/07 | Carla Hall

At 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, 12 boxes of alli, the first FDA-sanctioned diet drug to be sold without a prescription, were placed on the top shelf of a Santa Monica Walgreens' diet section. Four hours later, all but one had been sold.

"I have never in my life experienced anything like this," store manager Roe Love, a pharmacist for 20 years, said as she eyed the empty space next to the last box of 90 capsules selling for $59.99.

The fact that the product is kept with the rest of the diet drugs under locked glass on the shelf — to prevent theft — didn't deter people from requesting it.

Anyone going to try it?

It sounds as though one has to be very cognizant and disciplined in the amount of fat one injests or else they have some not so pleasant problems, but sure. If I am going to go through all the trouble to follow the sort of lower fat eating they suggest as I usually do when I am trying to lose weight why not do something that will help me lose up to 50% more atleast for a short time as motivation.

Overall though it is long term changes. I just find as one gets older even with massive exercise and correct eating it sure takes forever to lose 5 lbs or more and that can be very frustrating. I think that is why this would appeal to me IF I ever decided to use it.

Them main accomplishment though for me or anyone would be to stop the yoyo dieting that is so very detrimental to body and soul. Anyone else?

Where can you get real hoodia? I’ve lost 60 pounds the old fashioned way (diet and excercise, ick) but I have 50 to go. The more I lose, the harder it is to keep loosing. I’d love a boost, but I don’t want to be ripped off.

Nothing beats legitimate Hoodia. Nothing.

What is hoodia?

Our favorite line from when it still required an RX was “fatty stools that float.”

Sounds like Olestra. I love chips made with Olestra and I never had any “leakage” problems. Maybe you have to eat several bags.

Haven't tried Hoodia (an appetite suppressant) but found that EC stack (ephedrine plus caffeine, see also http://www.mesomorphosis.com/articles/haycock/ephedrine-and-beta-adrenergic-receptors.htm) to be good for fat loss while retaining lean muscle mass (at a calorie deficit, your body "metabolizes muscle tissue preferentially to fat tissue" to put it colloquially). EC also has (temporary - you have to cycle it to retain the effect) appetite suppressing properties.

The two major factors in the American obesity epidemic:

1. Malnutrition (No I am not kidding, and it doesn’t matter if every meal is nutritious, again I am not kidding)

2. Effect of bromides on the thyroid.

Many diet products such as ‘Hoodia’ will perform adsorption blocks. The same can be achieved with grinding up shellfish if one is not allergic. But such ‘tricks’ do not nourish the body and will not relieve cravings.

It's an herb from Africa (Hoodia gordonii) that supresses appetite. It's been talked about on Oprah and all that.

The problem is, the herb is rare (only the one grown in south Africa has the chemical that kills appetite) and lots of people who claim they are selling hoodia either aren't or are selling it mixed in with other stuff. Some study (can't remember who did it) said over half the "hoodia" on the market contained NO hoodia at all. So I'm sticking to diet and excercise for now. It's slow, but it works. (And this "alli" thing is gross, I'm dieting to be more attractive, I'm not sure but I'm betting "anal leakage" is not a good look.)

Anything that helps people avoid actually pushing themselves away from the Golden Corral buffet or exercising. Disgusting.

I think Lucianne says it best. ‘If you have to spend your life in the smallest room in the house, who’s going to know you’re skinny?’

Thanks for the reply. I’ve never heard of it before.

I never thought I’d find myself in this position, being thin all of my life, but this year I hit a point where the weight came on and despite excercise and diet, the weight loss isn’t happening.

I don’t think I’d want to try any new product though. Usually a year later some kind of health risk with the new product is discovered. And I definitely wouldn’t deal with the anal leakage. Gross!

My recently graduated pharmacist daughter will love that line! BTW, she does not recommend it, noting there is still a recommended diet to follow in the instructions. She suggests to throw away the pills, follow the diet, and add exercise for the same results.

LOL. All joking aside, except when combined with instant diarrhea sauce, milk is actually excellent for fat loss and muscle retention (the casein is the component in milk that is beneficial - cottage cheese is tops in that regard).

the buzz around this reincarnation, dubbed Alli, centers on its effectiveness and its less pleasurable side effects, like oily stools and gas with oily discharge.

eeeeew I think I'll stick with eating less and exercising more.
