Al Gore's so-called documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," has been criticized most prominently and vociferously by global warmists for its many exaggerations and fabrications. The segment that asserts warming is driving polar bears to extinction was refuted by wildlife biologists and other scientists who say the bears are thriving in the northern latitudes where temperatures have risen by an average of 4 F since 1950.
Now the film's lie about Mount Kilimanjaro's ice pack melting because of the buildup of greenhouse gases has been exposed. "Kilimanjaro is a grossly overused mis-example of the effects of climate change," said Philip Mote, a warmist from the University of Washington's Department of Atmospheric Sciences.
Writing in the July/August issue of American Scientist magazine, he and Georg Kaser, a glaciologist at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, said Kilimanjaro's glaciers have been receding for more than a century. That would be long before the increase in carbon-dioxide emissions that Mr. Gore and other warmist gangsters claim eventually will make the earth close to uninhabitable. Recent data show temperatures at the summit rarely rise above freezing, so a warmer atmosphere can't possibly be behind the retreating glaciers, they said.
The ice loss is driven by natural forces: drought-induced lack of snowfall to replenish the glaciers, and sublimation, a natural drying process that involving sunlight and low humidity.
The work of Messrs. Mote and Kaser shows honest scientific inquiry in the global-warming realm is still possible, but more importantly demonstrates anew the value of Occam's razor, when theories compete, the one with the fewest assumptions and hypotheticals must prevail, in analyzing warmists' preposterous speculations.
