The U.S. House of Representatives shot down a proposal Friday by U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz, that would have built an 854-mile, double layered security fences along the Mexican border.
Franks noted that only 13 miles of a Mexican border fence approved last year have been built and that the fencing is needed to improve border security.
"With over 4,000 people crossing our southern border illegally every day, our border remains one of our country's most critical national security vulnerabilities. In order to carry out an act of terrorism, a militant Islamist simply needs a porous border and a dangerous weapon," said Franks in a statement.
Franks represents Glendale, Peoria, Sun City and Kingman.
The fence plan failed by 272 to 149 votes. Most Democrats (including Arizona congressional members Harry Mitchell, Gabrielle Giffords , Ed Pastor and Raul Grijalva) voted against the border fence plan.
Most Republicans (including Franks and fellow Arizona Reps. Rick Renzi and John Shadegg) voted for the comprehensive fence plan.
Mesa GOP Congressman Jeff Flake crossed party lines and vote against the border fence bill.
The House did approve an overall homeland and border security appropriations bill Friday. Mitchell said he backed that bill because it allocates federal money to hire more Border Patrol Agents and resources to deport violent illegal immigrant criminals.
"Deporting those illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes is absolutely imperative to keeping our communities safe," Mitchell said in a statement. Mitchell represents Tempe and Scottsdale.
The state's four Democratic representatives and Renzi voted for the final bill. Flake, Franks and Shadegg opposed.
The votes could be a precursor to a big political fight over immigration reforms, a guest worker program and how to deal with the 12 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

Well, WE DON’T NEED TO. Done right, many will self-deport.

They keep telling us this is NOT an amnesty.....it seems they don't read the dictionary..if it looks, quacks and walks like a duck, it's a dirty, ugly pig of an amnesty bill.

It is utterly pathetic that we have sunk to this level. Anyway, I'll try to find out more about this. Pissant, have you heard anything?
If the Arizona State legislature voted to fund just a few miles of fencing, on Arizona land, it would strongly reduce the flow of illegal aliens.
Of course, the governor, a Democrat, would veto it. And even if her veto was overturned, the US federal government would intervene to STOP Arizona from building a fence.
Why? Because no matter WHAT they say, the vast majority in Congress, and the President, DO NOT WANT A BORDER FENCE.
And if you understand that simple thing, then you will realize that democracy has no meaning as far as much of Washington, D.C. is concerned.
THEY DO NOT WANT A FENCE, EVEN IF 90% OF AMERICA WANTS A FENCE. SO THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO STOP A FENCE FROM BEING BUILT.
Every other program is dependent on a fence. Every other program is being used as an excuse to NOT build a fence. And even if they are forced to vote in favor of a fence, they will vote against paying for it.
And even if they are forced to pay for it, they will first order that it be built first in uninhabitable and uncrossable desert, dozens of miles from any roads or water or people, so that it WON’T be built in the few major illegal channels for 20 years.
They have the determination of Winston Churchill, of using every means available, of making the American people suffer terribly, of depriving the American people of everything they cherish, of destroying our economy or plunging us into a deep depression, TO STOP A BORDER FENCE WITH MEXICO FROM BEING BUILT.
So at this point, we have to ask ourselves, should any of these people be allowed to hold office? Not just Republicans or Democrats, but anyone who opposes a border fence or seeks to undermine or deny its effective construction.
Will it take a major massacre of Americans murdered all at once, and all at the same time, in the same town, before they realize the error of their ways? Thousands are dying every year, and they do not care.
Obviously, they hold their beliefs so strongly that they must be removed from office at the point of a vote. And only those of either party that will sign a pledge to build and pay for, and quickly, a border fence, should be elected in their place.
It is not a Contract With America.
It is a Contract To Save America.
Of course they don't. We are going about this all wrong. If we are going to scream, it should be to scream that Congress is against, thoroughly, unequivocally AGAINST any border fence, and point out all the resistance of duplicity of their actions on this matter. (Like this very House vote yesterday.) A hard-hitting commercial (I'll produce it, of course...lol) would be a great tool with which to awaken the sheeple.
As it is, more and more are stirring from their long slumber...I just hope it's not too late.
-If this were the case, why not simply electrify the fence? This seems like it would be highly effective, especially considering they are using ladders made of rebar.
You can always short it out.

We have been had. They have no intention of building a fence.

Off hand I can think of only two of our elected misrepresentatives who have kids in the military: Dem Senator Webb of VA and Republican Representative Duncan Hunter of CA. There may be others, but not many if any.
I hope your point will be heeded by the Domestic Enemy. (Of course, they MIGHT be figuring on enlisting the help of the Mexican Federales, Spetnaz, PLA and who knows what others of the Foreign Enemies they take so much more seriously than they do 80% of American citizens.)
Unfortunately, looks like a done deal which many of us suspected long ago.

Why was this bill even needed? Hunter got it passed and the money appropriated last year! I don’t get it???
Do we really want to be part of Mexico?? Didn’t the Alamo teach us anything? We have 50 states, we DO NOT WANT MEXICO as part of the USA!! But eliminating the Border is in fact what these legislators apparently want to do. It is the only thing I can come up with for why they are refusing to build a fence that has been passed into law, signed by the President, and money appropriated for it.
