House rejects security fence at the border
The Business Journal ^ | Friday, June 15, 2007 | Not Identified

The U.S. House of Representatives shot down a proposal Friday by U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz, that would have built an 854-mile, double layered security fences along the Mexican border.

Franks noted that only 13 miles of a Mexican border fence approved last year have been built and that the fencing is needed to improve border security.

"With over 4,000 people crossing our southern border illegally every day, our border remains one of our country's most critical national security vulnerabilities. In order to carry out an act of terrorism, a militant Islamist simply needs a porous border and a dangerous weapon," said Franks in a statement.

Franks represents Glendale, Peoria, Sun City and Kingman.

The fence plan failed by 272 to 149 votes. Most Democrats (including Arizona congressional members Harry Mitchell, Gabrielle Giffords , Ed Pastor and Raul Grijalva) voted against the border fence plan.

Most Republicans (including Franks and fellow Arizona Reps. Rick Renzi and John Shadegg) voted for the comprehensive fence plan.

Mesa GOP Congressman Jeff Flake crossed party lines and vote against the border fence bill.

The House did approve an overall homeland and border security appropriations bill Friday. Mitchell said he backed that bill because it allocates federal money to hire more Border Patrol Agents and resources to deport violent illegal immigrant criminals.

"Deporting those illegal immigrants who have committed violent crimes is absolutely imperative to keeping our communities safe," Mitchell said in a statement. Mitchell represents Tempe and Scottsdale.

The state's four Democratic representatives and Renzi voted for the final bill. Flake, Franks and Shadegg opposed.

The votes could be a precursor to a big political fight over immigration reforms, a guest worker program and how to deal with the 12 million illegal immigrants already in the U.S.

We need to hit the downside of the Reagan amnesty just like the 9/11 commission. We should not consider any kind of immigration bill until a lot of questions have been answered.

Yes, and this absolutely involves motivating the sheeple as there is definite strength in numbers. A tough task, but not impossible.

I'm thinking commercials. Tough to-the-point message, simple concept, great visual, "catchy" phrase. I think I'm the only person who didn't like the "Where's the Fence?" commercial because it was too soft and "cute." It should be hard-hitting, even devastating, like George I's "revolving door" against Michael Dukakis. Or LBJ's flower girl.

Thanks for responding. Let's all just keep talking, and watch for a thread soon.

For some time I’ve been thinking (and said a few times) that the depth of depravity, dishonesty and scam artistry is too far gone - the situation is FUBAR.

This amnsety crap puts it over the top.

I don’t see how any fix can work. The elected ones are either totally duplicitous or get bought and sold the minute they get to DC (probably both), and think of the unelected (millions?) who work in the government entrails, both fedgov and state.

It’s enough to turn any thinking person into an anarchist, practically. The whole order needs to be re-tooled.

The problem is that some yahoos would show up with Confederate flags

Only those who don't know their history think the confederate flag is offensive.

I'd love to march on DC or march to the border. I love the South but I would carry my American flag to make a point.

The text of the amendment: "None of the funds made available in this Act for customs and border protection fencing, infrastructure, and technology may be used for anything but at least two layers of reinforced fencing and roads, pursuant to section 102 of Public Law 104-208." Here's a link to the vote (ayes 149, noes 272, not voting 16): http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?r110:1:./temp/~r110WjylwP:e210541:

I don’t think he would either. I’m not sure who but I wasn’t thinking of radio hosts. Too bad we don’t have a commanding politician or John Wayne type to get everyone’s attention.

Most Democrats voted against the border fence plan.

But of course. Democrats are fully aware that the vast majority of illegal aliens will become loyal Democrat voters and after the amnesty. (And many of those aliens already vote due to the successful vote fraud efforts of ACORN).

Republicans who voted against the fence and who advocate giving amnesty to tens of millions of future/current Democrat voters are unwittingly authoring their own demise.

You establish a format and let's begin a thread for every state in the union, a possible example for a title of each thread (just change the state name) : CALIFORNIA RECALL: Petition To Recall Elected Officials, Over Immigration Bill
Or, something like that for every state. I'll do Alabama once you establish the format. It should include senators and representatives, correct?

Yes, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm kicking around in my head. I may not know what I'm doing, but I do know we'll need ping lists and lots of FReeper input. And just imagine, if every concerned FReeper would commit to circulating the final idea - whatever that may be - via their own email lists - friends, family, etc. - this could really snowball.

I wish I could be around today to start something but, unfortunately, it looks like it will have to wait until tomorrow evening. You will be the first one on the ping list I will put together for myself, blam.

We're in talking stage right now, you people. Anyone who wants to be on a ping list, please post or FReepmail me. Let's all brainstorm!

The Flake strikes again.

Nothing "GOP" about the SOB.

The same problems are going to exists with mines. Are you going to confiscate people’s property through eminent domain in order to have mine field???

Are going to mine the Rio Grande?? What happens when a mine floats away and kills a US citizen??

"I don’t see how any fix can work."

Remember all politics are local.

Any national effort must come from each state otherwise the politicians will get lost in the masses. The politicians of each state will give attention when the effort originates in their state from which they are elected.

The House gives The United States “the” Finger and Bush agrees. There will be an uprising in ways that are unimaginable to the ruling class, and it won’t be by Hispanics living UNLAWFULLY here.

Americans have had enough!

I agree Rush wouldn't actively organize but I was thinking Dans Bake Sale too. Just get the word out and add legitimacy to it.

The Confederate flag is still a problem because this march would need to be against illegal immigration and the abuse of power by our government. All Americans should be involved, Dems and Republicans.

The sad thing is the amendment was defeated by republicans. Had republicans who voted against this switched their voted, the measure would have passed.

All Americans should be involved, Dems and Republicans.

This is a valuable point. There is very little disagreement among real Americans, no matter what their political affiliation...on this issue. 80% HATE this plan!

Bush is trying to break the republican party so Hillary will have the baton.

Don’t fall for it. If he can get congress to get the people mad enough to insite riot, he will declare MARTIAL LAW and cancel elections. He wins either way.

Congress needs to stop everything and start impeachment.

People need to realize you have been manipulated for at least 5 presidential terms. The Bushes and Clintons are part of the same group, someone is at the head of that group and I have my own theory.

This group does not want Ron Paul in this and his support is growing stronger amoung the Republicans as well as the Democrats. He may be the only person that can stop Bush and Clinton from giving the presidency to Hillary.

Bush and the others call us racist and bigots (never mind, I am married to a wonderful latin lady). Whatever I am, I am rather that than a traitor. These people have betrayed our nation, our constitution, and their oaths.

Saxby, if you and Isakson don't pour all your efforts into the border protection first movement, then you will get my vote in the form of giving it to your opponent.

I’ve been trying for the past 15 minutes to find out how our rep voted on this bill (amendment) and was pleased you included the link in your post but it didn’t work. Got another one?
