That makes sense. I appreciate the insight — I live in Western PA where the illegal immigrant problem hasn’t hit large-scale, so I’m a little bit clueless about the realities of the situation. I’m still outraged about the bill, though, because of the substance of it and the way Bush and its congressional supporters are going about it.

That is one argument. Let me pose another.

Bush knows that 30000 to 50000 operatives from the middle east have jumped the Mexican border. He also knows an attack from them is imminent. If the attack happens before amnesty is passed, there will be no amnesty. Therefore, he needs to pass this bill now before the excrement hits the fan.

“I know we are not being told everything”

Jeez, you have to be ‘told’ something to figure it out?

The article above explains it. SO DO I, HERE:
http://travismonitor.blogspot.com/2007/05/this-immigration-bill-is-built-to-fail.html

This Senate immigration bill is built to fail, and was written by 2 special interest groups - cheap labor lobbies and La Raza. They have a common interest in open borders.

this is simply about destroying America’s future for the short term benefit of some employers and the liberal/left organizations and parties (Democrats) in this country.

Quit with the mind-numbing conspiracy theories folks.
THERE IS NOTHING HIDDEN HERE. IT IS RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN.
READ THE DEMOCRAT PARTY PLATFORM 2004! NO ILELGAL LEFT BEHIND - THAT’S THE PLAN!

AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS, NO ENGLISH AS OUR LANGUAGE, AND SOCIALISM FOR ALL.

‘I know that if this bill was legitimate there wouldn’t be the rush to pass it, there wouldn’t be the cloak-and-dagger, underhanded deal-making, and there wouldn’t be the President of the United States, in a fit of sanctimonious anger, calling opponents of this monstrosity racist and xenophobic.”

Um, he says it because they have run out of arguments, is all.
“There is something about this so important to these people that they are willing to do anything to get this enshrined into law.”

These idiots think it is a good idea.

Yeah. So? We are not at war with Mexico.

Break... Break...

Pardon me for jumping in BUT, having spent a fair amount of time on the border in Texas and some in Arizona I can assure you that from the "south of the river or fence" perspective the statement We are not at war with Mexico is to them laughable.

A somewhat more accurate statement would be "The united States government has not officially surrendered to mexico, nor will the mexican government admit to a war with the united States."

carry on…

If the attack happens before amnesty is passed, there will be no amnesty.

That is the most logical thing I have heard proposed on the "why" issue in quite some time.

What you have said, post #118, is true of course.

I suppose Presidents Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, and Bush II were unaware to some extent, as we all were--just as they were unaware of the threat that Al Qaida et al. posed.

Even so, there is no excuse for not closing the Mexican Border now and halting further illegal immigration.

I hate mindless optimism, but Bush's position may carry some weight in encouraging some amnestized illegal aliens to support the Republican Party--or whatever takes its place if it has been mortally wounded--and not give knee-jerk support to the dangerous, decadent, Marxist, anti-American Democrat politicians.

If I were convinced that all these illegal aliens would vote the Democrats out of office, I would support amnesty and personally place a welcome mat on the Rio Grande.

Frankly--I would gladly swap ten Mexican immigrants for every gringo Leftist that we could expel from the country.

I'm not particularly concerned with illegal immigration or amnesty, per se. What I'm concerned about is enlarging the Democrat base support. It is the Left that is the greatest threat to the United States and the world, and the Democrat Party is its political machine. It is decadence. It is the enabler of America's enemies abroad. If left unchecked it will destroy the United States from within--note tagline. That's what I'm concerned about.

If immigrants from Latin America--or anywhere else--would help destroy the Left, I would welcome them with open arms!

Even if provisional “Z-visas” are given to all of the illegals after the bill is passed, they would probably be revoked by law, due to public outrage if a major terrorist attack is traced to covert jihadists blending in with illegal aliens.

I agree with the entire article and its premise. But I disagree on its conclusion. The number is NOT 12 million, it is closer to 20 million. And if it passes, expect 20 million MORE ASAP as they rush up here to then LIE and say they have been here for 6 months already. It will take up to 6 months to process all this paperwork, how many more will come? As many as they can.

America cannot assimilate and frankly won’t NEED to assimilate 40 million Mexicans.

The game will be over, the invasion complete and there will not be any undo.

If the number is closer to 20 million, expect double that number to come in LEGALLY due to chain migration. And then you will also have those who will make a stampede to get into the US prior to the closing of the up to 2 and 1/2 year window for processing Z visas. Hell, 250,000 to 500,000 have already come into the US since January 2007.

There is no way that bell will be unrung. Once legalized there will be no undoing of that, which is why the passage of the bill is so deadly to the future of this nation as we know it. The WH and Kennedy are well aware of that, which is why they legalize the status of the illegals at the stroke of a pen when the bill is signed.

Enjoy it while it lasts, but don't forget it for a second: our time is coming. You have the cash, but we have the numbers. A whole lot of us have damn long memories. We're gonna remember every bit of this sordid ordeal. And payback, as they say, is a bitch. (my emphasis)

I think the full version and the short version of the “20 Loopholes” make a very effective “1-2 punch.”

Chertoff and Kyl both seem to have answered that question recently, Kyl in his Wall Street Journal interview and Chertoff on Fox News yesterday: because businesses are starting to worry about efforts to enforce immigration laws at the local level.

That's been my guess all along. Whether right or wrong, it makes sense.
