Firefighters inhaled as ton of pot burned, chief says

EDINBURG, Texas (AP) -- Firefighters who spent half an hour fighting a blaze in which 2,000 pounds of marijuana went up in smoke breathed so much of it that they would have failed a drug test, a fire chief said.

It took more than 35 firefighters, 1,000 gallons of water and five gallons of chemical suppressant to extinguish the warehouse blaze on Wednesday, Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were investigating the origin of the drugs.

Snider said Thursday the firefighters were exposed to so much marijuana smoke that they would not be able to pass a drug test, despite wearing air packs to prevent them from inhaling toxic or hazardous fumes.

Your right —— but if their masks are that poor what would happen if the fumes were really toxic?
They need better equipment!

you are misunderstanding and overreacting. Of course we all here respect and admire firefighters. It’s the side effect of this particular fire that has a bit of a comical twist, whether you like it or agree or not. Chill dude!

I think you need to reread some of the posts. No one is criticizing the firefighters. In fact many have complemented them. The humour is for the dope burning up and the side effects of it.

Hence, the munchies comments. I honestly believe that the firefighters would enjoy the comments being made here, and have probably made many of the same themselves.

No, they never should have been exposed to the burning weed, but since it happened, they (and others) might as well try to see a brighter side to it.

Many of us have faced horrible things that have happened (or could have happened) and now joke about them. You should hear some of my stories sometimes. They were real scary at the time, but now I get a chuckle just thinking about them. My kids are going to enjoy hearing them when they get older. (my wife just thinks I’m crazy to have lived thru some of them)

Close examination yields evidence of at least 4 officials involved in burning of marijuana:

No more 11/2 inch..all inch and three quarter and up.

With 120-plus lbs of pressure it takes at least two to handle the hose.

(Debriefing Scenario)

The first officer on scene makes a terrible mistake and goes down wind and sits down with his raidio and no mask.

The Battalion Chief arrives and decides to look for the office... finds him and begins a deep discussion about truck placement, hydraulics. and chili cheese fries.

Mean while the second company arrives on the scene and all four report to the front of the house
as a rapid intervention team. They too begin to drift into the smoke as if it were the Borg.

The third company on the scene arrives with “Engine 35 on scene one block north staging at a plug.” All hands jump off and run inside ...tossing the masks side.

The engineer of the first company on responds “pfff...har har har har...haaaaa... Engine 35 on!!... oh maaan ...ha ha ha ha...bwaaaaha ha ha”

Dispatcher calls for second alarm.....

"Several of them thought they had been there for four days!"

Ha! I liked that one.

Remembering those days when I would stare at a TV commercial, and think it was a full-length movie!!!!!!

You don’t understand. The masks worked just fine. They kept taking them off!

Back in Texas in the late 60's, I had several friends pool their money and buy a kilo of marijuana to resell. They opened up the brick and had to dry it so one of them had the bright idea to dry it in the oven. One of them set the oven to broil and they spread the weed over a couple of cookie pans.....a few minutes later there was a fire in the oven and all of the weed burned...

While it was burning they called all of their friends over to the house...I often wondered how they got the smell out of the house before their parents got home...

Nah, if it were crack they’d be stirring the ashes looking for unevaporated pieces.
Or so I’m told.

Personally I have no tolerance for humor involving firefighters. NONE. (Unless it's a firefighter posting)

Yeah, the jokes might have been funny in FR after the fact, but there was no humor in responding to the call. I would point you to 9 firefighters dead this last week in Kentucky.

That's my only point. When you enter a building, you really don't know.
Unless you're a firefighter in real life, I personally don't believe you are qualified to determine what's funny and what's not.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it....

At least the owner can't get nailed for possession.

Or can they?

Actually the nine firefighters that were killed were in South Carolina, not Kentucky. But, I see your point nonetheless.
