A Pyrrhic Victory (Sour Grapes from Linda Chavez)
Townhall ^ | June 29, 2007 | Linda Chavez

Posted on 06/29/2007 8:46:21 AM PDT by rightwingintelligentsia

Immigration reform is dead. But before conservatives who killed this bill start popping champagne corks, they ought to consider the following.

Our borders will be less secure, not more. Employers who want to do the right thing and only hire legal workers won't have the tools to do so. The 12 million illegal aliens who are here now will continue to live in the shadows, making them less likely to cooperate with law enforcement to report crimes and less likely to pay their full share of taxes. In other words, the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse.

But you won't hear this if you tune in to talk radio over the next few days or read conservative blogs. There will be lots of gloating over having killed "amnesty." There will be claims that senators finally "listened to the people." And, no doubt, some conservatives will be emboldened to consider the next step in their war against illegal immigration, namely to deport those now here illegally.

--snip--

But none of this matters to the radio talk show hosts who encouraged their millions of listeners to shut down the congressional phone system with calls protesting "amnesty." Nor does it matter to the myriad direct mail outfits opposing immigration, which will reap tens of millions of dollars in donations to fatten their coffers as a result of this "victory."

"...the mess we created by an outdated and ill-conceived immigration policy 20 years ago will just get worse. "

Social Security is outdated and ill-conceived as well, so I can ignore that system too, right?

What is remarkable is that Linda seems to have a genetic blind spot (a failing of those who feel inferior, justified or not).

I have not ever heard any of the people she attacks utter a negative word about legal Mexican or other Latino immigrants, so I must conclude that she enjoys both victim status and engaging in, Frankenstein-like, creating an army of straw men.

Incidentally, in spite of the occasional Freeper moron from Northern Europe who suggests otherwise, I have never heard a single negative statement, indeed, any statements at all, about legal Mexicans and other Latinos.

Where's the beef?

1984 doublespeak... How can it be any less secure than it is now? The existing laws are not being enforced! And there is no assurance whatsoever that the new ones will be enforced either!

There is no penalty, ever, for the bureaucracy ignoring laws that they are Constitutionally obligated to apply. Perhaps that should be an essential part of all laws.

LOL! Absolutely right on target!

You should post that as a response to Linda on Town Hall.

And as a reminder, Chavez is the one who lost her chance at a white house appointment because it was discovered she was giving money to an illegal alien LIVING IN HER HOME!!!

Damn that talk radio and the people who listen to it! You’d think they’d believe the government should actually respond to them.

Time for Linda Chavez to head on home and hire some more illegals to clean up, care for the kiddies and mow her lawn.

Linda has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY with conservatives. She could join the bunch at MSNBC.

Utter Garbage... The Dems couldn’t even get a simple majority out of their own party for this one. The American People won this skirmish. The GOP didn’t lose it, although they tried...

This article is full of BS. The tools to enforce the existing law is already there, its just no one is doing it. Linda Chavez can take a flying leap.

One of the many people she called out by name as being a Mex-hater was Lou Dobbs who is married to a Mexican woman. IIRC, Chavez is half Mexican and married to a Jewish guy, so her kids are 1/4 Mexican. That means that she attacked a guy as anti-Mexican whose kids have twice the Mexican blood her own do.

That's why a fence needs to be built you ditz!

BS
They can still voluntarily check with the EEVS system, which is exactly the option they had before. If an employers' intent is as you claim then they would've been using the system. Since they don't, and didn't, use it voluntarily to begin with your supposition, and that's all it is, is wrong from the outset!

BTW, check out what the SSN card is supposed to be made of...the same material as our paper money! Got one of those fancy pens they check $100 bills with handy?

Coulter on O’Reilly last evening...said she would support amnesty for those illegals who ratted out their employers for hiring illegals. That should stop some things pretty quick, I’d say.

It never ceases to amaze me that these twinks, regardless of how long they have been sniffing around the yard, never seem to be able to catch a clue.

Example: There is always the whine about how we would starve if it were not for stoop labor to gather crops. Yet, isn't it amazing that harvesting equipment has been developed for just about everything, now?

There is no joy in killing this bill, except for sociopaths. It should not have been required. There are people in the Senate who have to pay for being bought. There is still a fence to be built, and if these people with their hands in our pockets don't get on the stick, they will suffer more than just this little speed bump.

The United States creates 1.5 to 2 million jobs every year, but without immigrants -- legal and illegal -- we'd have a hard time filling all those jobs. The sensible way to solve that problem would be to create a market-based legal immigration system that would increase the number of persons admitted when job creation justified it and decrease the number when unemployment rose.

So, Linda, just how would a bill that gives 12 or 15 or 20 or 30 million or more illegal aliens permanent visas address this?

If your bill was so important, your puppets in the senate would not have:

  1. Negotiated it in smoky back rooms where La Raza was well represented but the American middle class was not.
  2. Insisted that the starting point was that we accept 12 or 15 or 20 or 30 million or more illegal aliens without regard to their suitability for contributing to-- or at least not damaging-- this country. IOW, the same test we have for legal immigrants.
  3. Voted down a mild-mannered amendment from Sen. Coryn of Texas to exclude gang banger, felons and those with terrorist ties from Z-Visa eligibility.
  4. Given illegal aliens priority over aspiring legal immigrants (some of whom have been waiting for years!) to get visas, citizenship, jobs and collect social security.
  5. Offered more empty promises in return for amnesty now, promises which still haven't been kept from the 1986 amnesty bill.

In short, Linda, I cannot understand why Mexico is so bad that millions risk their lives to leave. Nor can I accept that Mexico is so great that we want to turn this nation into a larger version of the same.

Just how many people from Mexico or anywhere else do you think America will be able to help if we allow ourselves to be dragged down to their level?

Linda has been like this since she got spanked down for having an illegal working for her. She lost out a cabinet spot and since then been a full blown amnesty supporter.

I gave up on her years ago.
