La. outlaws 'dilation and extraction' abortion

State becomes first to ban controversial procedure

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana - Louisiana became the first American state Friday to outlaw a controversial abortion procedure that involves partially removing the fetus intact from a woman's uterus, then crushing or cutting its skull to complete the abortion.

The new law allows the procedure in only one situation at any time during pregnancy: when failure to perform it would endanger the mother's life. The procedure would be a crime in all other cases, even if the pregnancy is expected to cause health problems for the mother.

Anti-abortion activists call the procedure "partial-birth abortion;" surgeons and abortion rights activists call it "dilation and extraction."

Criminal penalties

Democratic Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed into law criminal penalties for doctors who perform the surgery: fines of between $1,000 and $10,000, and jail terms of between one and 10 years.

The statute is parallel to a federal ban that President George W. Bush signed into law in 2003, which was upheld in April by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Lawmakers in other states are expected to consider similar bans. Louisiana is the first to enact one, according to the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion-rights group.

‘Dilation and extraction’?

Sounds suspiciously like ‘Partial Birth Abortion’.

It’s against the law, hunh?

Do you realize how much this will muddy up Roe v. Wade?

(Do I HAFTA include the < /sarc > tag?)

Anti-abortion activists call the procedure "partial-birth abortion;" surgeons and abortion rights activists call it "dilation and extraction."

And what a shock, MSNBC titles the article for the pro-abortionists.

Abortion is a euphemism for this butchery that the likes of a Dr. Mengla would find appealing.

Louisiana is very Catholic, and very pro-life. Northern Louisiana is more Bible Belt than Catholic.

Voodoo only plays well in New Orleans (what's left of it).

Gov Blanco has some good qualities I guess. At least she is different from the other Democrat woman governor named Kathleen, in Kansas. She is as pro abortion as they come. How shameful.

The abortion lobby can't even tell people the purpose of an abortion to is KILL the unborn child. Or that partial birth abortion is tantamount to infanticide. So who is being dishonest here?

Dilate WHAT?

Extract WHAT?

HOW is it EXTRACTED? What happens AFTER it’s extracted??

They NEVER answer these questions. No one in the MSM will ask them anyway.

I know many people that did NOT KNOW what a partial birth abortion was. When I explained the procedure, they were ALL horrified. I was asked, “How can that be legal?” and these are people of a more liberal persuasion. My MIL, though, takes the cake. She flat-out said to my hubby, “That never happens.” She is in serious denial because she is a democrat.

Anti-abortion activists call the procedure "partial-birth abortion;" surgeons and abortion rights activists call it "dilation and extraction."

So, naturally, MSNBC titled the AP report "La. outlaws 'dilation and extraction' abortion."

ERIC ALTERMAN: "What liberal media?"

L.N. SMITHEE: "This one, jerk!"
