Americans falling behind in height
Fox News ^

Posted on 07/15/2007 5:22:25 PM PDT by future F22 pilot

But just as it has in so many other arenas, America's predominance in height has faded. Americans reached a height plateau after World War II, gradually falling behind the rest of the world as it continued growing taller.

By the time the baby boomers reached adulthood in the 1960s, most northern and western European countries had caught up with and surpassed the United States. Young adults in Japan and other prosperous Asian countries now stand nearly as tall as Americans do.

If if it were not for manufactured crises what would the media do in their spare time?

Have “experts” tell them how awesome they are?

I was 6' 3/8" at age 12. Time has cost me some compression down to 5' 10 3/4" at age 50. My 24 and 20 year old sons are 6' 2 1/2". My 27 year old son is 6' 3/8".

After a trip to the chiropractor, I have a better idea of where some of that height went. My spine is pretty bent and twisted. I may get some of that lost height back as the chiropractor works his magic to eliminate the problems.

Why would anyone think it’s a joke? My wife is 11” taller than I am. It happens.

That's a bigger height spread than I have with my guy. He's about 5'5" and I'm 6'1"... that's eight inches. The size differential still feels a bit weird to me... but if it works for you, more power to you!

What are those theories?

I know that some short guys won't date taller women--but of the ones who will: It has always seemed to me that if a guy is short, he is already used to other people being bigger than he is... so a few more inches of height in his woman isn't going to bother him.

OTOH, some of the taller men seem really bothered by the prospect of a woman tall enough to look them in the eye. I tried to date off the Internet for a while, and a lot of the tall men (6' to 6'6") insisted on having a woman no taller than 5'8" or 5'10". One guy who was about 6'4" said that if a woman were as tall as he was, that she would not be "feminine" enough for him merely by virtue of her height.

I remember reading Dr. Toni Grant's book "On Being a Woman," in which she stated that men have a need to mate downward. Don't know if it's true for all men, but it seems to be true for a lot of men.

Also, a lot of really tiny women insist on having a man two or three times their size. I used to work with a woman who was 5'8", who refused to date any man who was shorter than 6'6". Her reason was that the guy had to be big enough to tower over her by six inches when she was wearing four-inch heels.

The daughter of a friend is about 5'4" and she is married to a man who is at least a foot taller than she is. All of her pregnancies have been very difficult... large babies, and she hemorrhaged with at least one of them. I guess no one thinks of the practical consequences of such a size differential until the woman is in the middle of labor. Ouch! is all I can say to that.

I have also met a few men who either prefer very tall women or who refuse to date women shorter than themselves. In my experience, these men are all shorter than six feet tall themselves.

I saw that article the other day where the nearly eight-foot-tall Chinese man had a girlfriend who was only about 5'5". Seems kind of weird to me, as I have heard that the Manchurian Chinese have a lot of giants among them, even among the women. I have seen a couple of these big women. They make me look merely average-sized.

I am 6 ft. I have always liked tall women. (>5’10) My dream was always a Swedish super model that excelled in the high jump.

A lot of men have historically gone for those blonde Swedes. Some of them are quite striking in appearance. Also the other Scandinavians.

I'm a brunette of Russian/Austrian heritage. No blondes in my family, but there are a number of redheads!

Of my grandparents who came here, only one was a six-footer (mother's father). My father's father was shorter than his wife. My maternal grandmother had a half-sister who was a very tiny woman, a ballerina in her youth.

But they all came here, got enough to eat, and eventually produced me. ;)

I have sisters and cousins who are all over the place in terms of size.

I agree...This stuff is completely out of control.

You were walking around in Las Vegas last week? It was 108 degrees! You were really out walking around?

Sure. Heat doesn't really bother me...and the next casino is never more than a few steps away. But having to leave my black car in outdoor parking lots off-Strip was a different story... ;)

Hey, I'm a woman who topped out at 6'1". Can I help it if we've got so many short-statured illegal aliens and others (most Asian women are maybe half my size--except for maybe the Mongolian Chinese)?

Oh come now, most Asian women are not 3' short!

Mostly, petite? Yes.

Mostly, dwarfs? No.

Full disclosure notice: my wife is Korean. Yes, she's petite!

I knew it....there's the problem. We're not fat. We're just too short for our weight.

The solution is mandatory, bi-monthly stretching machines to be inserted in the next health bill and initiated on the first grade level.

You mean we aren’t Evolving? How will the Darwinists explain this one?

TOE is all about natural selection. For a species to "evolve" there has to be some reason why certain members of the species don't/can't reproduce and pass their genes along. Barring some global epidemic causing sterility in the majority of the human population, we're done evolving.

Measuring trick. Measure in the morning when you first get up. Compression occurs during daily activity. I understand that it is a noticeable change in height between the beginning of the day until the end...up to an inch.

At one point, my doctor said she could put me into stretching therapy (to relieve pressure) but by the time I bounced home in the car, any gain would be lost.

"Today's Korean youth are much bigger. I am also 6'6" and a lot of these guys are looking me in the eye......~!"

In '97 I flew from Seoul to Pusan. In the airport there, I saw a ROK Marine that had to be pushing 7'. Up at the DMZ, you'll also see any number of ROKs that are taller than average as the ones pulling duty there are (or at least were) selected for their visual intimidation factor.
