But just as it has in so many other arenas, America's predominance in height has faded. Americans reached a height plateau after World War II, gradually falling behind the rest of the world as it continued growing taller.

By the time the baby boomers reached adulthood in the 1960s, most northern and western European countries had caught up with and surpassed the United States. Young adults in Japan and other prosperous Asian countries now stand nearly as tall as Americans do.

This article totally ignores the change in the ethnic composition of America during the 20th Century. We accepted millions of immigrants from countries with shorter average statures. We are now taking in uncounted millions of stubby Hispanics.

Stature is controlled by a combination of nutrician and heredity. Former East Germans are in the most Nordic part of Germany: that is why they were such good athletes (where stature helps greatly) and why they are taller than the avaerga e of today’s Americans. The Dutch are heavily Nordic in ethnicity, in case you never noticed.

This article is BS. It doesn’t take into account all of the immigrants, legal and illegal who have migrated from countries with “short” people. That’s how “Americans” got shorter.

Hey, I'm a woman who topped out at 6'1". Can I help it if we've got so many short-statured illegal aliens and others (most Asian women are maybe half my size--except for maybe the Mongolian Chinese)?

I've done my part to bring up the height average! But I'm only one Amazon! Maybe someone should start a campaign to have more American men marry Amazons! ;)
