Tonight Show's Jay Leno Jokes of Priests as Pedophiles Six Times in Five Weeks

By John-Henry Westen

NEW YORK, July 26, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic League has revealed a sustained attack against the Catholic Church from Jay Leno, host of the Tonight Show.   Describing it as "Jay Leno's obsession," the League points out that in the past five weeks, the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" has ridiculed priests six times and the pope once; all of the priest jokes were sexual in nature and painted priests as molesters.

·   June 18: Robin Williams gets into an extended diatribe about priests as pedophiles

·   June 20: Leno cracks a joke about priests as pedophiles

·   June 21: Leno makes a joke about a drunken pedophile priest

·   July 12: Leno ridicules the pope for restating Catholic doctrine on salvation

·   July 18: Leno portrays all priests as pedophiles

·   July 23: Leno jokes about priests using the Harry Potter books as "bait" to lure kids

·   July 23: Leno tells a story about a priest who pays to see a male stripper at a gay nightclub and jokes that the priest was cheating on his altar boy

"Hypocritical priests make for good script, but in the world Jay Leno apparently lives in, priests have a monopoly on hypocrisy," Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented.  "This would seem to suggest that either he is clueless about other expressions of hypocrisy, or there is a strong animus against Catholicism at work. If it's the former, the Catholic League can be of assistance-we track lots of hypocrites, many of whom live in Leno's Hollywood backyard. If it's the latter, we suggest he knock it off."

I teach my children that Christians are persecuted in this country. It’s OK to dfiscriminate against us, tell lies about us, and express hatred for us. And although we’re not Catholic, I make a point of telling my kids to watch how Catholics are treated by society. They get the worst of it.

If the CC had not just settled a case for Billions in the LA archdiocese, I would understand this reaction.

This is not persecution, it is current news and they deserve the criticism.

AAACK! Any chance you could, you know, in the future, just post the text of a cited web page instead of the entire HTML source?

In the words of Jim Carey in Liar Liar when asked for legal advice from a client who was repeatedly getting arrested. “STOP BREAKING THE LAW ASS HOLE!”

I was raised a Catholic but have had nothing to do with the church since I was old enough to make up my own mind. A celibate priesthood is lunacy and does not work. One of the more ridiculous things I can think of is receiving pre-marriage counseling from the church if the one giving the advice is a celibate. And the church leaders decided long ago that in the case of pedophile priests, the survival of the church was more important than the well being of flock. That is why they downplayed the incidents in the past and will still do so when they can. I cheer everytime I hear that they have to pay millions.

I can’t imagine tithing to a church that is going to use the money to pay off it’s sexual molestation settlement.

It would really help if the priests just wouldn’t molest kids anymore. It can become an extended PR problem left unchecked.

Considering the Catholic Church’s complete lack of prosecuting pedophilic priests and even their hiding of such wanton criminals, Jay and everyone else has the right to criticize the church.

The settlement came down on July 13th.
So how about the jokes before that date?

Somebody’s job is to watch tv, and count the number of times their particular group is ‘persecuted’, in their opinion? Sounds like the Vatican version of CAIR.

“So how about the jokes before that date?”

I think we can chalk that up to centuries of child molestation. I’m sure the comedians will drop it at some point down the line. Maybe in a few decades assuming it stops.

At times I get irritated with Jay Leno but as a whole he is fair and balanced. After all this is entertainment and no one has to watch it if all they are going to do is criticise.

I notice this article doesn't mention the $650 million settlement, nor does it mention the schoolteacher and underage sex jokes, nor the political jokes,(Vitter) and others such as the astronaut wearing diapers to make time driving.

leno is a comedian. Catholic priests pedophiles are easy fodder. It's not like they are the victims here.

I agree...especially given the fact that for Leno, the LA Diocese settlement is right in his backyard. People speak about local events, and as others have posted, if the RC Church doesn't want to be ridiculed about this, they should have figuratively, if not literally, castrated the offenders as they became known.

I write this as a nominal Roman Catholic who is continuously being drawn to the Orthodox faith.

Priests are easy fodder no matter what.

How about the other priests who were accused but innocent? Hey, that doesn’t matter, they are easy fodder, right?

Pedophile Priests aren't about Christianity. They are about infiltration by evil into a Christian institution, like some foul disease. The failure of the Catholic Church, or any other Christian sect to purge these monsters only goes as far to suggest that the infrastructure has successfully been weakened enough to successfully compromise church leadership.

As a whole, I do not see the problem impacting Christianity. The people continue to reject these monsters and church attendance in weakened institutions reflect the trend.

Yet if the Church itself intends to survive, they need to stand up and continue to fight the evil that threatens to consume it.

Jay Leno is basically making fun of a cancer patient here, IMHO. If he finds that funny, I can't really help or relate to his sense of humor.
