Tonight Show's Jay Leno Jokes of Priests as Pedophiles Six Times in Five Weeks

By John-Henry Westen

NEW YORK, July 26, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic League has revealed a sustained attack against the Catholic Church from Jay Leno, host of the Tonight Show.   Describing it as "Jay Leno's obsession," the League points out that in the past five weeks, the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" has ridiculed priests six times and the pope once; all of the priest jokes were sexual in nature and painted priests as molesters.

·   June 18: Robin Williams gets into an extended diatribe about priests as pedophiles

·   June 20: Leno cracks a joke about priests as pedophiles

·   June 21: Leno makes a joke about a drunken pedophile priest

·   July 12: Leno ridicules the pope for restating Catholic doctrine on salvation

·   July 18: Leno portrays all priests as pedophiles

·   July 23: Leno jokes about priests using the Harry Potter books as "bait" to lure kids

·   July 23: Leno tells a story about a priest who pays to see a male stripper at a gay nightclub and jokes that the priest was cheating on his altar boy

"Hypocritical priests make for good script, but in the world Jay Leno apparently lives in, priests have a monopoly on hypocrisy," Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented.  "This would seem to suggest that either he is clueless about other expressions of hypocrisy, or there is a strong animus against Catholicism at work. If it's the former, the Catholic League can be of assistance-we track lots of hypocrites, many of whom live in Leno's Hollywood backyard. If it's the latter, we suggest he knock it off."

This is not persecution, it is current news and they deserve the criticism.

What the media does not report and what most people are not aware of is that there is a much larger number of Protestant ministers who have been convicted of this than Catholic priests. The MSM never mentions that fact.

There is not a single Catholic giving kudos to the hierarchy about this. Why do you think there is?

There's a difference between approving of bad behavior, being silent about it, and disapproving of said conduct. I guess I'm just not aware of Catholic outrage at the hierarchy. As I said, I left the Catholic church, it was over two decades ago, and if I'm unaware of Catholics criticizing their church leaders for what happened, you can bet that people who have no ties to Catholicism are equally unaware.

We are aware of the "why is the MSM picking on us?" feeling expressed by Catholics on Internet forums, so we just see that side of the Catholic response to the scandal. It looks like wagon-circling.

Hes Italian and probably Roman Catholic..

Wonder how many hundred years this has been going on "worldwide"?... Interesting that the Nuns don't have a lesbian problem.. Course I don't know that as a fact either..

A lot of the Catholic hierarchy protected and hid pedophile priests.
They brought this on themselves.

IMHO they are lucky Jesus isn’t here now to deal with it.

And would this be the responsibility of the Church or the authorities in various localities?

Government, but I gave two options, one for the governmental "authorities" and the other for the church. You only responded to one. The church hasn't punished them (to my knowledge) either.

“IMHO they are lucky Jesus isn’t here now to deal with it.”

Instead of running the money changers out of the Temple He’d be running the buggers and sodomites out of the church.

Shouldn’t it be the responsibility of the Church to fire, expunge, excommunicate, reform (if that’s even possible), and cooperate with and encourage the prosecution of pedophile priests and to some degree their enablers? Given the world-wide reach of the Church, perhaps prosecution by local authorities would not be as effective as federal.

Yes, but you haven’t continued to label all women with strollers bigots, have you?

>>I guess I’m just not aware of Catholic outrage at the hierarchy<<

Hop on over to the Catholic Answers forums. You’ll see all of us flipping out over there.

The whole thing comes down to this. I can slam my sister, my brother can slam by sister but if you slam my sister, I will stay silent so as not to feed into your hatred. We get enough here about our dogma and doctrine to choke a horse.
We’re not about to give those that have disdain for us any more fuel.

But that doesn’t mean that we are not appalled by this. Ask a Catholic what they think about the whole thing. You’ll get an earfull.

Personally, I put it at the feet of JPII. Spiritually, great guy. However, that need to be liked would not let him do a thing about this, and his feeling that the “homosexual” label was something communists do to condemn people and inprison them. WRONG. He should have nipped this crap in the bud instead of jetting off and kissing the Koran.

You are wrong. The fact is, I never labeled the lady with the stoller as a bigot. I saw humor in her assumption- I am a hispanic guy working on a yard in a fairly nice neighborhood, the stereotypes are bound to jump out. To the degree that it did was outrageously funny. As for getting profiled at airports, I've done nothing wrong, but I don't paint myself as a victim, though like an innocent Catholic priest getting bent out of shape over jokes about pedophiles, I suppose I could. Frankly I'm glad they pick me out of a line instead of the old woman in a wheelchair. It showed me they were paying attention. Now they have to be more pc in their approach- can't frisk the short brown guy with the carry on, he might get offended.

More Protestant Sex Offenders than RC.

That is certainly true, human nature being human nature. The difference being that we learn of these Pedophiles from the Police Blotter and not from the news damages had been paid bexause the church had cover=d up the sex offenders.

Feed the fire. If someone has disdain for me, so be it, bully for them. Their hatred means nothing to me. But if their disdain is not for me, rather it is for pedophiles and those that have enabled pedophiles to remain, then my joining their chorus can help solve the problem.

Exactly!
You haven’t labeled every lady with a stoller as a bigot.
But many here have labeled every priest as a pedophille. and every Bishop an enabler. Sorry but knowing my own Uncle and Great-Uncle along with my pastor, this is unwarranted.

If the Catholic Church has become an object of ridicule, then that seems to fall on the shoulders of church governance which has failed to adequately serve the intests of the countless faithful in the church.

>>Certainly, in parts of post 89<<

And that is the point.
Unless I state what I did in post 89 at the beginning of every statement I make, I am seen as someone who does defends the Bishops and Priests.

Then it’s used as fire by some FReepers to slam the entire church. (I can almost bet the farm that this statement will be cut and pasted in the future - it’s happened before).

Not all priests are guilty.
Not all Bishops are guilty.
We are making huge changes from the parish level on up.

But none of it makes any difference to those who want to use it to sterotype Catholics. And it just gets old.
