Juan Gomez was poised for greatness.
At Miami Killian High, he aced 15 Advanced Placement classes and earned a near-perfect score on his SATs. He exceled in football and was popular with classmates. He had plans to attend Miami Dade College's Honors College.
But on Thursday, Gomez, 18, sat in an immigrant detention facility in Broward County, periodically placing desperate calls to friends. He's being deported to Colombia, the country where he was born, but a place he has never known.

Little said she’s concerned this kind of activity is on the rise.
Things are looking up from my perspective.
Colombia is really a beautiful country and he won't have to live at a standard of living any less that than which he is accustomed to live here. It's just not as safe. You have to lock down EVERYTHING and it'll still probably get stolen.
However, I really do feel sorry for this kid. None of this is his fault. He just turned 18 and is not responsible for the decisions his parents made.

My immigration reform proposal:
1. Build a long, strong, effective border fence.
2. Increase border patrols and assure that agents have real enforcment power. (No “catch and release”, etc.)
3. DENY illegal aliens access to any government services, including schools. Require mandatory, automatic deportation of any illegal alien who ATTEMPTS to ACCESS any government service, whether such service is federal, state, or local. (Note: The only exception would be dire-emergency medical treatment, followed immediately [after sufficient recovery time] by mandatory, automatic deportation.)
4. REQUIRE a MANDATORY jail sentence for any illegal alien found to be holding fraudulent identification, followed by mandatory, automatic deportation. (Note: Lengthier jail sentences would be MANDATORY for the “identity theft” of living American citizens.)
5. Require fines and criminal proceedings against any employer (including company officers and responsible hiring personnel) who knowingly hires and employs illegal aliens. Jail for repeat offenders.
6. “Anchor babies” (babies born to illegal alien parents) are to be DENIED citizenship, and are to be immediately deported along with their parents. (Note: This provision should be made retroactive for existing “anchor babies”, up to an age to be debated.)
7. All law enforcement officers (federal, state, or local) who IN THE COURSE OF THEIR NORMAL DAILY LAW ENFORCEMENT DUTIES become aware of an illegal alien’s status are REQUIRED to notify the appropriate federal authorities immediately and hold that alien in custody for up to two days (sufficient time for federal authorities to take custody and deport).
8. Make English the “official” national language and require that everyone who applies for residency status or citizenship (and their school-age minor dependents) demonstrate some level of proficiency in the national language.
(Note: Jail sentences noted in the provisions above MUST be MANDATORY MINIMUM sentences in order to avoid “end runs” by liberal activist Democrat judges.)
The above eight provisions, if passed, would largely solve the illegal alien problem. Illegals would disappear BY ATTRITION since they would be: a) unemployable without proper authorization, b) unable to access government welfare and other services, c) unable to enroll their illegal alien children in government schools, and d) unable to use the despicable “anchor baby” ploy.
Many, if not most, illegal aliens will return to their countries of origin voluntarily once it is clear to them that there is little reason to remain in the US.
**** Note: No logistically burdensome and expensive “roundup” of 12 million-plus illegal aliens is required, recommended, or even necessary. Illegal aliens would disappear by ATTRITION. Therefore, the “red herring” argument that it would be “impossible to deport all 20 million illegal aliens” becomes moot. ****
Meanwhile, reasonable LEGAL immigration laws (including a “guest worker” program) should be streamlined, strictly controlled, and RELENTLESSLY ENFORCED in order to address the legitimate needs of U.S. employers.

Since he’s now 18, can’t he petition the govt. to allow him to return to the US on a Student Visa? After all, he’s already been accepted by the college. I’d much rather someone like this young man is given a Visa rather than some unknown twenty-something ‘student from a country that we know is not friendly to the US.
Don’t care how talented he is, illegals need to all be deported to the other side of that wall that should have already been built. I could probably line up at least a dozen young people who are very talented, hard working and received top grades in high school but don’t fit into a minority status and are thus blown off for any meaningful scholarships. Send our talented kids to school and illegals be damned.

This incredibly lucky kid got an apparently first rate education thanks to the American taxpayers. Is he grateful? Doesn’t sound like it.
He can take his education back to Columbia and make Columbia a better place.

Being in the country for more than 1 year illegally is a mandatory 10 year bar on entering the U.S. Certain circumstances can extend it to a lifetime ban. These kids will never be allowed to come to college here.
That being said, Some leniency for the kids, like lifting the madatory bar for LEGAL re-entry, IMHO is reasonable. The kids should not be punished for the choice of their parents.
no not quite true. This kid can file for a “waiver of excludablity” the forms are at http://www.uscis.gov . It takes a mere eight months to process and this “student” can be back in the USA on a student visa.
All objections to this deportation are utter BS and just a anecdotal manure fest to try and Pass the Dream AMNESTY Act. The Dream Act is just a back door path to amnesty by making 100% of all illegal alien children into anchor babies who then can have their parents stay.
It is PURE amnesty since we are rewarding the illegal aliens AND WE THE TAXPAYERS WERE SUCKERED INTO PAYING FOR THESE CRIMINALS TO OVERCROWD OUR CHILDRENS CLASSROOMS.
So this child could be an anchor baby, how many citizens where blocked out of the AP classes? So this illegal alien could be an Advance Placement Student, a LEGAL student had to be shut out.

These illegal aliens literally STOLE an AP (advanced placement, for those in rio linda. A FINITE number of seats) seat from legal residents and citizens.
You are advocating REWARDING A THEFT just as certain as the DREAM ACT IS AMNESTY.
Deporting this illegal alien to ensure LEGAL residents are not supplanted by ILLEGAL alients is not only correct, it is an obligation.
That's the liberal plan...go after the least offenders to turn the average American against deportation...all you hear is "we can't deport 12 million people"...and yet there are those who are already self-deporting even though we don't really have an aggressive plan against them in action yet. Just imagine if the feds really took a stand to crack down on illegal aliens? They would be leaving in droves...you have to be a total moron to think we have to get buses and round up 20 million people...just start deporting the worst cases in earnest ..make it rough to live and work here illegally by going after employers and the majority will self-deport...
I believe you’ve misunderstood me. I’m not advocating rewarding a theft, and I freely admit that I don’t know what it means to steal an advance placement. I know what it is. I came here as a foreign student and am now a legal immigrant. So, believe me, my feelings about illegal immigration in general and amnesty in particular are at least as strong as yours.
What I had meant to communicate in my post was that there is nothing really sad in the story about their being deported. I’m sorry that the parents’ bad judgment will now have such serious repercussions for two (presumably) nice young men, but beside that, ninguna simpatia.
I hope he gets deported. No perks to illegal aliens and that includes free education at taxpayer’s expense for their children.
I feel sorry for the kid. At the same time I deeply resent Latinos who feel entitled to invade America. Most illegal Colombians here in Florida come on visas and never leave. They are as illegal as Mexicans who bust across our land borders. The few Colombians I have met look very European. I’m sure I’ve seen many more but they haven’t been pointed out to me so how do I know anything?
UPDATE:
The two illegal alien boys have been released and apparently have 45 DAYS to plead their case for the passage of the dream act. The news story was short on details.
I suspect they were released for a stay hearing. However watchout for these BS anecdotes to be used as illogical reasons to pass Dream Act AMNESTY.
These illegal aliens WITH THEIR FAMILY have been here for MORE THAN TEN YEARS. That is more than enough time to apply for the rolling amnesty that exists under current law.
Their friends are foolish and misguided. Specifically misguided by adults who are using these ignorant children as cover for the AMENSTY effort.
Both my sons graduated from Killian, in the late 70s.
