New Popeye DVD set: 1933-1938--Outstanding! (vanity)

Posted on 07/31/2007 7:18:09 PM PDT by wolfinator

We just bought the newly remastered Popeye DVD set. If you're a fan, you must see this. It has all the old black and white cartoons from 1933-1938. The clarity is so sharp and the sound is outstanding. Many of the toons have optional commentaries, which really add to the experience.

Strange thing, I guess, is that it's put out by Warner Bros. I didn't know they owned the rights! But bravo to whoever made this happen.

I think we missed the moment

And I'm thinking it's kindof good that we did, lol.

I used to watch Popeye in the '50's when I came home from school. Kids today don't have TV shows with true American heroes like Popeye.

There were so many great shows back then. The reason that the after school stuff was so good is that these cartoons were mostly made for adults as shorts in the movie theaters in pre-TV decades. They had to have some degree of humor and sophistication. Once the educationist folks got hold of children's TV, it went pretty much straight into the crapper and became preachy, short bursts of manic nonsense sandwiched between many layers of advertising.

Popeye was the best non PC cartoon of all time.....

A stretch I must say. You can’t say that Popeye is more non-pc than South Park, the Simpsons and even some othere. It was a good cartoon though, but not that horrendous movie they put out in 1982....that was a snoozefest!!!!!

Amazon.

Also, anyone see and know about the ones from Warner Bros? I’m also interested in those.

I’m only halfway through the second disk. There are so many good commentaries and mini-documentaries. Of the latter, there’s one just about Wimpy, his roots and role within the comics and cartoons, etc.

I remember Saturday morning television. Our dad would sit down with us and watch The Road Runner.

He got a real hoot out of that cartoon.

Saturday afternoons was my favortite though Sky King, Flicka, Fury, and I believe Rin Tin Tin.

Also included in this release are the first two Three-Color-Technicolor two-reel specials: “Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor”, and “Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves”.

Sky King was great. Did you watch Spin and Marty? Remember Thunderball XL5 and Supercar?

I bought it today at Best Buy! Thanks for the info! I also bought the new Woody Woodpecker release. It doesn’t have as many bonus features but I’ve heard it’s also great, with classic cartoons from the 40s & early 50s.
