Harry Potter: 3 More Things I Learned
ExileStreet ^ | 8/1/07 | John Mark Reynolds

Posted on 08/01/2007 6:59:32 AM PDT by ParsifalCA

I am warning those who have not finished the series . . . and there must be still a few of them by now. . . that there are spoilers ahead. I have just finished the last book . . . having spent an enjoyable evening with it thanks to Sam’s Club and an indulgent wife.

I am done with Harry Potter and enjoying the literary aftertaste the way one enjoys a fine meal almost as much after it is done as when it is being consumed . . . though it is a bit sad that the series is finished.

And it is really finished . . .

Will one be able to re-read the books with pleasure?

I think the answer is only a tentative “yes.” If one knows the “puzzles” and “the secrets” of the book, it will not take away the charm of the characters or the fun of a good Quidditch match, but the first read will always be the best.

The strength of these books is in the plot and the second read, when everything is known, will be satisfying for finding all the clues to what happens . . . but I am hard pressed to know if I will want to re-read them a third or fourth time.

A really great book is as good on the fourth read . . . and some children’s books (Little White Horse) are better.

I deeply enjoyed the last book and thought the ending satisfying. For those who found them quite Christian, they will find much in this last book to give strength to their idea.

“You’ve seen all the movies? But not read any of the books because they’re evil?”

I saw the movies because I didn’t have 12 hrs. a year to spend on this infantile tripe. But I am very interested in the rise in interest in occultism we are seeing in America and wanted to take a look at one of it’s more prominent examples.

How very noble of you. Of course, one movie (maybe two) could have done it. But all 4? Sure...

You haven’t read the books, yet you know they’re infantile tripe. You’ve only seen the movies. They’re NOT the same thing.

What rise of occultsm in America? You’re worried about that? Whatever. There’s much more important things to worry about IMO.

Or as my cousin, Betsy, used to say when she was little, and just learning her prayers;
"Hail, Mary, full of grapes"

When my mother was a child, she thought the next line was:

"Blessed art thou, a monk swimming."

Watch out for those Bogarts under the kitchen sink; they could see up your skirt!

To say nothing of those durn wrackspurts.

While I understand that nobody ever gets convinced in these arguments there’s a very personal conflict between me and the condemning Christian crowd. They’ve been saying my hobbies are evil for a long time and it really pi$%## me off. They’re actually the reason I wasted a couple of years studying the occult, after years of having these clowns tell me that the games I played and the music I listened to was going to drive me to Satan I had to figure out what I was missing. So I wasted a couple of years reading crappy books by weird freaks like Crowley and figured out I wasn’t missing anything, the CC crowd was just making crap up.

That crowd also seriously impeded my faith, it’s hard to want to be a Christian when you’re constantly being told by other “Christians” that you can’t listen to that music or play that game or read those books and be one of them. So really I get in these arguments for the potential readers in the same position I was in 20 odd years ago, I want any 12 year old Potter fans to know that the condemners are a minority and a pile of idiots, and there’s nothing wrong with reading Potter, it won’t make them evil, and it doesn’t mean they can’t be good Christians.

www.amazon.co.uk. They’re pretty expensive, though.

Oh, now I'm calling bolshevik.

You could have read them twice over in the time you've spent arguing about them on FR.

My aunt till the day she died couldn’t talk about losing her sister when she was 18 and her sister was 17 without crying.

Fair points all. You have more patience and passion than I do. If Harry Potter were real, I would have used the Muffliato charm on these posts a long time ago.

Keep fighting the good fight.

Amen brother!!!

I spent the first 25 years of my life trying to fit into that mold until God finally showed me that He's much bigger than all of that.

Would you at least pretend you have the reading comprehension of a wet shoe. There are NO facts in that post, it is entirely a pack of lies. And I already wasted the hour and half rebutting that exact list years ago, it doesn’t deserve another hour and a half. If you’re any good with FR’s search function you can find my rebuttal of that list with what I told you. Aquinas fan posted the list, I killed it, and it happened in 2001 maybe 2000.

Oh and how about dealing with my rebuttal of the first point. The whole “invited” thing is a bald faced LIE, and if you’ve seen the movies like you say then you know it’s a LIE and yet you posted that LIE. Stop knowingly posting LIES, it makes you a LIAR too.

So you are seeking out things you think are occult and checking them out... Personally I try to avoid the occult. Didn't you get the memo that it is evil?

Yep, I remember the same crap went on back in the ‘80s when I was in high school. D&D would make you a satanist. Judas Priest caused two kids to commit suicide. Stairway To Heaven had a backwards message that would cause you to worship Satan. AC/DC really means “After Christ, Devil Comes”. “KISS” (The rock group) really stands for “Knights In Satan’s Service”. And don’t even get us started on Blue Oyster Cult and their weird symbol and their umlaut. etc, etc, etc...

If it's 'infantile tripe', you are making a huge case for your need for some kind of treatment.

Here's a 'what if' for you. What if your children were REQUIRED to read the books as part of a lesson on occultism in society? Would you allow that?
