Thanks.

I still remember the Sunshine Skyway collapse in St Petersburg, Florida years ago when a barge hit it.

I had to drive over that bridge a lot back in the day, and that bridge was pretty high up, I couldn’t imagine the horror that falling that far must have been.

“Major Minneapolis Bridge Collapses Over Mississippi River”
Wednesday, August 01, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS —

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “One witness says she saw a a construction worker “flying in the air” and another man noticed a big hole in the bridge earlier in the day.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Federal officials and local reports are downplaying the likelihood of terrorism as a cause for the bridge damage.

“We are monitoring the situation through state and local authorities,” said Homeland Security Department Spokesman Russ Knocke. “At this time, it does not appear to be an act of terrorism. There has been construction activity in the area, and all signs point to this being a construction or engineering issue.””

Once in a while, it happens.

Exactly.......what is your point?

You don’t live here. You have no idea about our roads and our weather.

“Some bomb components are more odoriferous than others. C-4 has an incredibly strong scent; it’s followed in decreasing order of smelliness by dynamite, TOVEX, detonating cord, and TNT.”

And then there are the explosives that only sensitive dog noses can detect.

Anyone see any hound dogs sniffing around near the bridge?

When the Homeland Security announcement was read, my husband & I looked at each other in disbelief. How does HS know it wasn't terrorism? Too soon to tell anything, imho.

My husband was on the nextel with his resident engineer and they can not understand how such a major structural failure could happen. All my husband kept saying was "I'm glad that I didn't build that!" He's a heavy construction, project superintendent, and builds bridges for a living.

I believe there are several factors at work here that could have contributed to a structural failure completely independent of nefarious behavior.

Absolutely! Remember the blackout of 2003? It wasn't any single event or failure that caused it, but instead, it was the combined effect of many "mini-failures". Many factors contributed to that event, and I'm pretty certain that this will be the case with this bridge failure as well.

As has so often been the case, MS-NBC is doing an excellent job of covering these sad events. Also, their local NBC affiliate.

My wife told me right away when I started botching about FoxNews' awful camera work "Switch to PMS!" She was right. Better camera work and info by far.

Thanks Shelayne, I’m west of Mpls but still maintain my 612 cell phone. I’ll be sure not to use it.

I’m in disbelief at this point.

Agreed. And look at what is holding up the outside lanes. Cantilevers that appear to be pencil-thin.

Somebody is in deep doo-doo.

“A questions for the Civil Engineers & Designers out there. Is it possible that the combination of rush hour traffic (bumper to bumper maximizing the number of vehicles), lanes being closed (maximize the load to one side), years of potential neglect and the vibration of a passing freight train caused overstressing of a “weak point” that caused a cascading effect of popped rivets, etc. that would have led to catastrophic failure?”

All those questions asked of you make me think about the gazillion year old Tappan Zee Bridge in Westchester, which has needed to be replaced for ages, but the rich bast!rds in Westchester and Rockland don’t want their views of the Hudson impacted. Hope they don’t mind all the bodies washing up on their shores...
