Dad beats, shoots and paralyzes Teen daughters lover

BENTONVILLE -- The father of a 17-year-old girl found his daughter's boyfriend hiding inside her bedroom closet Tuesday, beat him bloody with a pool stick, then left the room to fetch a gun. The daughter and boyfriend blocked the door with a dresser, so the father shot through the closed door, hitting the boyfriend in the back and paralyzing him, police said.

George David Reed, 48, posted a $150,000 bond and was freed from jail Wednesday afternoon as Michael Austin Guzman, 19, underwent surgery to treat a bullet lodged in his spinal cord.

Three of Guzman's vertebrae are fractured and doctors don't expect him to regain feeling or mobility below his waist, according to a probable cause affidavit released Wednesday after Reed's bond hearing. He was still in surgery Wednesday evening in Joplin's Freeman Health System, according to an intensive care nurse.

Benton County Circuit Judge Xollie Duncan set the bond Wednesday based on a request from Chief Deputy Prosecutor Shane Wilkinson. Reed was arrested on suspicion of a felony terroristic act, the most serious type of felony aside from capital murder, punishable by up to life in prison. He was also arrested on a charge of felony first-degree battery.

Defense attorney W.H. Taylor, who spent the morning consulting with his client at the jail, did not object to the bond. Reed is to be arraigned Sept. 10 before Circuit Judge David Clinger.

Taylor said that Reed has three children and lives with his wife, Sharon, at 13569 Vaughn Road near Highfill. Reed has been in Northwest Arkansas since 1962, owns a farm and rental properties, and has operated a moving and storage business since 1983.

“If someone is beat bloody with a cue stick he would not be bouncing right back up.”

Never been scared to death, have you?

I don’t see how anyone could think this Father not guilty of committing a serious crime.

He went for the gun, what else would be his intent since he had already beaten the boy bloody?

[In the closet Bad plan]

I don’t think it would have mattered WHERE he was when the father came in, the result would have probably been the same.

I refrained with all my might from making a joke here, too sad a subject.

There are plenty of laws the guy broke, why would a terrorism statute apply?

No. I doubt the dad had any political or ideological changes he wanted to make in government or society.... ;-)

Not a day goes by that some father doesn’t find a boy in a daughters bedroom nowdays. We all know that.

I can well imagine them beating the boy up with fists, that would be the first inclination. He went far beyond that.

I preferred the way Uncle Buck (John Candy) handled his “Bug” problem.

"Reed said he'd warned Guzman not to come around without a chaperone."

Duly noted...by me at least.

I cannot figure why the daughter did not comprehend she was setting up big trouble

And her boyfriend -

If he was even outside on the lawn at night he could have been shot legally as a trepasser in some states if he was not recognized and was sneaking around in the dark going into a window

People do not seem to see consequences for what they do

They must expect nothing to ever happen

This is like the old husband shoots wife’s boyfriend scenario

How a jury will see this will be hard to figure

Depends on who & where

I’m looking at surnames

“Lets wait and see where the bullet holes are in the door. Reed says he did not shoot into the room but up and down at the top and bottom of the door.”

There’s exactly one thing to consider here. Your daughter is on the other side of that door and if you fire there’s always a chance you might hit her. Anybody who would even think about shooting unless you were absolutely convinced it was the only way to save her life doesn’t deserve to be a parent.

It really doesn’t matter one bit where the bullet holes are, the guy is an idiot. At that point he wasn’t thinking about his daughter or her virginity, he was worried about his pride.

While you don’t rejoice in the death of millions it appears that you do rejoice in the death of one.

(1) Which person's death are you referring to?

(2) What post of mine could conceivably be described at expressing joy at someone's death? Especially on a thread that isn't even about anyone dying?

If you are blocking the path of exit, how in God’s name is the young man supposed to do what you ask?

It occurred to me after I hit the post button -- everybody agrees that Daddy Dearest left the room where Young Love was expressed, went to his room and got the gun from his nightstand.

So what was the kid's problem then? He does'nt make a run for the door when gets a break in the action? He and Daddy's Little Girl come up with enough energy to barricade themselves in the room? That might have been enough to send Pops over the edge, right there. Kid wants lock me out of a room in a house I pay the mortgage on? After her punk boyfriend fights with me? Yeah, I could see some one coming unglued on that one.

There are some major problems with both sides of this story. When I was 19, I could have out run any lard butt 40 something, even after getting my ashes hauled and popped a few times with a pool cue. The classic Lynyrd Skynyrd song "Give Me 2 Steps" comes to mind.

Not that I would know anything about situations like that, of course... This kid sure as heck got 2 steps toward the door and did'nt take 'em. Just another bad decision in a day where every body made a bunch of them.

The man finds an invader in his home, stalking and molesting his daughter. When he confronts the invader, he is kicked in the shins. Then the invader blocks the door to his daughter’s room with a dresser.

Although the daughter is partly responsible for complying with the invader, I believe the only thing the father did wrong was to shoot through a closed door.

Did it ever occur to you that one of the reasons Dad’s get so defensive about their daughters, viz a vis 14-29 yo old men, is due to their personal memories of being that age?

To: Motherhood IS a career

The story indicates that the incident took place after 930am. And the girl was beyond the age of consent, so no statutory rape took place.

The exxaggerations and presumptions here are amazing.
___________

Agreed. The ‘beaten near death’ thing is a complete exxageration. Followed very closely by your presumption that the father was somehow acting in fashion that deserves defense.

As I mentioned earlier, shooting through a doorr (high or low matters not) behind which the daughter is standing cannot be defended.
