LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Spanish-language newscaster who had an affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has received a two-month suspension for violating conflict-of-interest policies, her network said Thursday.
Mirthala Salinas was having the relationship with Villaraigosa when she announced the news of his separation from his wife of 20 years on local Telemundo station KVEA, Channel 52.
Salinas was suspended without pay. The findings of Telemundo's three-week investigation were reported on its national newscast Thursday.
"Her reading of copy during newscasts ... regarding the Mayors separation from his wife was a flagrant violation of these guidelines," Telemundo network president Don Browne wrote in a memo to employees.
Messages left with Telemundo and Salinas' representative were not immediately returned.
Telemundo's parent company is NBC Universal.
Salinas, 35, was placed on leave July 5 while her employer investigated whether her romantic relationship with Villaraigosa breached journalistic ethics.
She has said station managers knew of her relationship with the mayor before she anchored the news of his break up. Salinas led into the story by saying, "The rumors were true."
Adultery is OK, but you can’t broadcast anything you learn between the sheets. That would violate journalistic ethics.

After this the Mayor should have to have an affair with Helen Thomas or Rosie O’Donnell, just to prove that he is not the shallow kind of guy who is inordinately affected by a woman’s looks. After all, Helen or Rosie could provide the kind of pillow talk that offers scintillating leftist wit and all the latest “I hate Bush” jokes. I am tired of left-liberal males who think they have some right to practice the “facial discrimination” of only getting it on with hot women. Come on Mr. Mayor, try Helen Thomas for a change, you just might like it.

An “obvious touch up”? AIT, I date a Hispanic lady and have found, generally speaking, that Latinas are proud of their femininity and spend lots of time dressing and “prettying up.” Mirthala is no exception, she is “business pretty.” “Touching up” is an altogether different subject.
