Yep, I saw that one, too. Still, I prefer the original use of the word, since it is fairly precise in what it means. In fact, the cholera example above is still consistent with the original use of the word where every tenth one is destroyed or killed. I think a 10% reduction in the population constitutes a fairly drastic reduction.

Decimation was practiced in the Roman legions when a legion failed an attack, they were stood up in line, and every tenth soldier was put to the edge of the sword as motivation to the remaining troops.

Because these terrorists are among the most stupid people in the world, any no-holds-barred war against them would have succeeded by now. But, alas, the current war on those evil murderers continues to bog down in political concerns, both in America and in Europe.
