S.F. gun shows in Newsom’s crosshairs
San Francisco Examiner ^ | Aug 9, 2007 | Bonnie Eslinger

A city hit hard by gun violence should not have gun sales at its back door, said Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is expected to announce today that The City is seeking state legislation to end gun shows at the Cow Palace.

While the exhibition hall is technically located in Daly City, it is just blocks away from San Francisco’s Sunnydale Housing Project, one of many neighborhoods in The City plagued by gun violence.

Although the gun shows are legal, Newsom said numerous illegal gun transactions occur in the parking lot during the show, which will take place Saturday and Sunday. Another gun show is scheduled in November.

“It needs to be shut down, and we’re going to do our best to do that,” Newsom said.

Any effort to stop the gun shows would require a change in state law, however, because the Cow Palace is owned and operated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Gun control and crime control are entirely different issues. And S.F. is failing at crime control.

Anyone remember this:

Two years ago amid a streak of violence on the streets of San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom said on a local radio show that if the homicide rates continued to climb, voters could start a campaign to recall him and that he might even sign the petition himself.

"I'll tell you what," Newsom said, "...begin the campaign to recall me. And you know what? I may be right there as a co-signer of that effort."

I can’t believe that idiot would complain about guns being in his back door, but he is all for other more dangerous things being back there.

So based on this reasoning, a city hit hard by AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases should not have Gay Pride parades and neighborhoods like the Castro which glorify the homosexual lifestyle. A city hit hard by sexually transmitted diseases, esp. among male homosexuals, should then take action to close bathhouses and other gathering points for promiscuous sexual behavior.

I say arm everyone, let them figure it out, afterwards mop everything up...

BTW, I’m not making an Anti statement here, sometimes a good dust up will weed away the bad...

Sounds like a lack of policing problem to me. Why not have the local cops patrolling the parking lot to prevent this. But, alas, that wouldn’t get the to point that this dope is trying to get to, would it?

I am so happy not to be stuck in the city. I am so thankful he is not my mayor. SF peeps who voted for him should hang their heads in shame.

Hopefully, his stupid arms won’t grow any longer.

I cannot stand Gavin Newsome.

I am glad that I do not live in one of those target rich cities like Chicago or DC and soon to be SF.

If he managed to get to be mayor of San Francisco, I can imagine what he is - a leftist lib.

I agree.
I’d be willing to bet a good bit of cash that AIDS killed a lot more folks in San Francisco than guns did last year.
You can make laws against guns but can you make laws against Gays who spread AIDS???? A gun might be used in a killing and then the cops take it off the street. The Gay HIV+ men just keep spreading aids and nothing happens to them.

I’ve attended a number of gun shows at the Cow Palace and there are uniformed police all over the place both inside and outside. The idea that illegal sales are going on in the parking lot is nonsense...but the Mayor knows that.

This is just another piece of press agentry designed to raise the Mayor’s visibility on the national scene. His eyes are on the White House in a few years.

The man is the epitome of the “empty suit” politician.

When the Richter hits 8.0 or more, and the City by the Bay, is in the bay...leave it there.

Actually he is the establishment candidate in SF. Libs like Chris Daly.

***Newsom said numerous illegal gun transactions occur in the parking lot during the show, ***

You would rather have them taken place in the alley behind a McDonalds?

Many people know that you can get a better deal from someone in the parking lot wanting to sell a gun than you can inside from a dealer. Often half what the dealer inside is asking.

Or you can wait till the last hour inside when people needing cash are desperate to sell their gun.

IT"S NOT EVEN IN HIS FREAKIN JURISDICTION! It's in a different city! So unless the legislation he's pushing for is at the state level, I don't know what he thinks he's going to be able to do about it.

That never seems to make any difference to nut cases does it? They don’t think, just react to make it sound like they really want to do something. As I said a “Nut Case”.

I guess if you could see the center from inside the city boundaries he could have the SF cops form a barricade on the road back into SF and have them stop and search all the cars. SCOTUS will just say the Fourth Amendment shouldn’t apply since the searchees aren’t scumbag criminals.

I’ve wondered about that. He could actually be scarier than she-who-must-not-be-elected.
