I wonder if all the relatives were notified before this came out.

Prayers for the family and friends of our troops.

I hope the families have been informed before this news was reported.

More…from the BBC

It was the deadliest helicopter crash since January, when another Black Hawk went down in Diyala province.

The worst US helicopter crash in Iraq was in January 2005, when 30 marines and a sailor were killed when a Super Stallion came down in bad weather near the Jordanian border.

The 14 soldiers killed on Wednesday were part of Task Force Lightening.

A second Black Hawk helicopter had been flying alongside them at the time.

It is not known precisely where the helicopter crashed, but the statement was issued by Multinational Division-North, which is based in Tikrit.

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge in Baghdad says the fairly frequent losses of helicopters over the past four years has demonstrated the dependence of US forces on them and their vulnerability.

I wonder if dust/sand storms is a factor. I would hope that there would be engineering changes to make sure enough maintenance is done.

Sad news from Iraq.

There has been no mention of any external factors being responsible and the fact that there was another helicopter in company as a witness seems to point to catastrophic mechanical failure.

Gotta go ...BBS

“I wish we had just went there, got Sadamm, and headed out again.....

saddam was Iraq was a stable country before before; he was a brutal but apparently effective despot who managed to keep shiites completely under his thumb, as well as anyone else who might be a threat to him. Once you remove that kind of power center, you are going to need to replace it lest others do so, or try to and create chaos.

A large concern with removing saddam dating from the first gulf war was the creation of a shiite-dominated iraq with some level of iranian influence, which apparently is what we have in fact created, at least at the national level.

“saddam was Iraq was a stable country before before; “

should read

saddam was the reason Iraq was a stable country before (his removal);

What is your definition of stable?

1. Thousands fo Iraqi refugees had to leave Iraq during Saddam’s rule.

2. Saddam fought a long and deadly war with Iran.

3. Saddam invaded Kuwait and had to be pushed out by force.

4. Heavy U.S. and British presence over and around Iraq in order to keep him from further actions, particularly against the Kurds.

Throwing people into wood chippers tends to keep most people compliant.

You are right: Iraq was internally more stable. The same way that Nazi Germany was more stable in 1942 than in 1945. Tyranny is nothing if not stable.

Removing a “stable” cancer like Sadamm leads inevitably to instability and a power vacuumn. The problem today is that there is another stable and virulent cancer right next door to Iraq, which (it appears) that no-one is doing anything about.
