True. But they should be criminally prosecuted only when they do harm human beings, not private property.

Thankfully, you're not a lawmaker.

I think he has a point. Are we allowed to kill animals or not?
‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’

Just another example of how deep the erosion of our freedoms have become. Women have the “right” to choose to murder their unborn children while property owners cannot use their property in ways they deem appropriate. We slaughter cows, pigs, chickens, etc. at our whim by the millions while Vick can’t fight legally purchased dog’s on his own legally purchased property. What business is it of government what he does with his dog’s on his land?
I would never view or wager on a dog fight, but I believe in our private property rights to do so if we choose.

While dogfighting is horrible, this whole deal should bring up a debate that nobody wants to get into. Most "conservatives" would agree that animals have no "rights" and are private property. Sure, being cruel to an animal is dispicable, but those of us who know about rural and farm life know that you aren't ever 100% humane to animals, which are your property. Shooting dogs who run your cattle is common place. But you'd get brought up on charges for doing that in a more suburban area. And chickens, cattle - how do people think they are killed? Their necks are broken. And I have heard of people putting down their pets, though "humanely" with a needle, for stupid reasons that in the end, aren't "humane".

Anyway, I think Vick should be shunned for being involved in such a heinous act, but people wanting this guy to go to prison for years upon years, I just can't agree with. A little jail, fine. Shunned by the NFL, definitely. But he didn't hurt a person or kill them as far as we know.

Can you not see the difference between killing an animal because it poses a threat of some kind, and torturing animals for fun?

“Actually, when we cut to the chase on Vick’s crime(s), the only thing he is guilty of is the gambling component.”

“I wonder why he plead guilty then?”

For gambling - duh. It “is” against the law to fight dogs for the purpose of gambling. Same with chickens, except in New Mexico I think. Until recently, it was legal to fight chickens in Oklahome too but I “think” it is now against the law there, but not sure.

Sorry. The view of animals as private property argument does not bestow the right to torture, maim, and abuse animals as you desire. Those of you who hold this position really ought to give it more thought (if possible).

And when he's gone, hopefully his stench won't linger too long.

It really would behoove you to bone up on the facts of this issue before thumping your chest in a faux-libertarian rant. Vick's dogfighting was not restricted to his own private property. Thus the violation of interstate commerce laws.

Really. Cruelty to humans? That’s a misdemeanor

It is?

I didn't know that making humans fight to the death was just a misdemeanor.

Trying to equate an animal to the private-property equivalent of a lampshade is just stupidity. You can do what you want with your lampshade. Spray-paint it, pee on it, cut it into little pieces, burn it - whatever you want to do to it. But you cannot do that to an animal. If you do, you are not only breaking the law but you are a sick bastard who deserves to be tied up, doused with blood and thrown into the middle of a pack of ravenous pit bulls.

I agree that there is a dichotomy here when it comes to abortion, but just because abortion happens to be legal in this country doesn’t mean that we should stoop to the same level when it comes to the treatment of animals.

Well, I detect a certain amount of “tongue in cheek” commentary in this string. However, concerning my comments I am attempting to make the point that those who live on farms and ranches and live and even depend on domestic animals for their livihoods have a different perspective when it comes to dogs than urban apartment dwellers - more pragmatic for sure. I won’t even bother to comment on cat lovers, not worth the effort...

In every case you bring up except pregnancy the dog has done something dangerous in order to warrant being killed, which is nothing at all like killing dogs for the fun of it.

If the dog is pregnant, it’s your own fault for not spaying it in the first place and you are just as evil as any other animal torturer when you kill it.

Dogs don’t fight to the death in dog fights. They fight until one quits or dies. I think Esquire did an article on it several years back.

You should be able to pick up a video called BumFights in your local rental shop

What part of dog-fighting being a felony do you not understand?

Dog fighting is considered cruelty to animals and rightfully so
‘’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’’

In your opinion. You don’t own Vick’s dogs. I trust you understand that the domestic dog, if allowed to, would hunt you in packs and eat you for food, and would fight each other at will for the choicest piece of you.

Vick surely did not depend on these animals for his “livelihood”. Vick didn’t need to feed his buddies pit bull stew to survive. Vick wasn’t protecting the chicken coop from marauding packs of dogs. Vick is not a farmer, rancher, hunter, fisherman, etc. Vick is not a misunderstood victim of “city-dwellers” who simply don’t get how animals are treated by the rugged hearty types who populate the countryside.

Congratulations.

You just took the bait from a n00bie troll and your inane comments will be posted and quoted on DU within the hour.

Dogfighting is illegal because the people of Virginia abhor cruelty enough that they've passed a LAW against it. Your comment about property rights is absolutely stupid in that context. What's next, your right to operate a crack lab "on your own property"?

The plural of "dog" does not have an apostrophe, btw. It's spelled "dogs".
