I trust you understand that the domestic dog, if allowed to, would hunt you in packs and eat you for food, and would fight each other at will for the choicest piece of you

Thanks for the heads up. We better get them before they get us! Geez you are dense...

Well, guess there are gonna be a whole bunch of rural kids locked up as felony perp’s for fighting ole Fido. As a dog lover and owner for all of my life, I do not condone being cruel to animals. “However”, dogs as with other domestic animals, are private property. As such, the owner has a right to kill these animals. Now, electrocution, drowning, banging a dog’s head against a concrete wall does seem somewhat excessive. But, is this actually against the law? Those of us who were raised on farms and ranches are well aware of what happens to dogs that run cattle, especially those that are pregnant, chase milk cows, kill chickens, eat eggs, etc, etc. The answer for you city dwellers is shot dead in the head. Actually, when we cut to the chase on Vick's crime(s), the only thing he is guilty of is the gambling component.

He is guilty of breaking a law that is on the books as a felony-dog fighting.

He is guilty of breaking God's moral law regarding cruelty to animals.

The righteous man regardeth the life of his beast.(Pro.12:7)

So laws that punish cruelty to animals are just laws based on Biblical principle.

And dont' give me 'I wouldn't do that but he has a right to' nonsense.

If you condone that wickedness you are just as guilty as he is.

Pit Bulls Break Into Home, Maul Woman
GIG HARBOR, Wash. — Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman said.

The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs’ owner.

The pit bulls also killed a neighbor’s Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

“The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor’s house, came in and was attacked by the dogs,” Troyer said.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance.

Officers “had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site,” Troyer said.

The dogs were taken to a Humane Society and will probably be destroyed, he said.

It was not immediately known why the dogs entered the house, whether the woman had dogs of her own or what set off the attack.
*****************************

Who deserves more time in jail the owner of these dogs or Vick?

“In every case you bring up except pregnancy the dog has done something dangerous in order to warrant being killed”

Sometimes I dispare for the Republic. Dilbert, suggest you re-read my comments. I was referring to the cow being pregnant not the dog. While re-reading my comments, perhaps you will note that I did not condone Vick’s vile acts. Merely made the statement that his methods of killing his dogs may not be illegal. Gezzz, if you're gonna get in the game, try to remember to wear your helmet...

In your opinion. You don’t own Vick’s dogs. I trust you understand that the domestic dog, if allowed to, would hunt you in packs and eat you for food, and would fight each other at will for the choicest piece of you.

Not my opinion, it is the law.

And as for dogs, they are domestic animals and help human beings.

Moreover, dog fighters steal pets from homes to use as 'bait' dogs, some of which they found in Vick's animal killing factory.

For gambling - duh. It “is” against the law to fight dogs for the purpose of gambling. Same with chickens, except in New Mexico I think. Until recently, it was legal to fight chickens in Oklahome too but I “think” it is now against the law there, but not sure.

The POS Vick is also going to be charged with animal cruelty in the state of Virginia, where it is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Any comment, David?

I think he's hiding under his bed.

For some FReepers, the leap from “should not be condoned” to “should be illegal” is very short.

I agree that cruelty to animals is repugnant and impolite. I agree that nobody should do it. I do not see why it should be illegal, however.

Why should it be illegal?

“We better get them before they get us!”

I suggest we allow good citizens like Michael Vick to keep pitting them against each other so we don’t have to fight them in our own homes!

I wonder if the venerable “sport” of bear-bating will also be making a comeback in the near future.

I paid about eighty bucks to go see the Bobcats get blown away by Phoenix last December, and I was so high up my neck started to hurt from looking down at such a steep angle.

But you cannot do that to an animal.

Why not? I know that it is against the law, of course. But why is it against the law? Is the fact that it is not acceptable to many people sufficient reason?

What part of dog-fighting being a felony do you not understand?

Interesting question. If dog-fighting were a felony the way being an illegal alien is illegal then I could see the misunderstanding.

My, my... guess I “really” pushed this one’s buttons! Heh,heh.... Wonder what the reaction would be if it were discovered that Vick had been giving abortions to his pregnant dogs. “That” would probably be ok...

I am attempting to make the point that those who live on farms and ranches and live and even depend on domestic animals for their livihoods have a different perspective when it comes to dogs than urban apartment dwellers

I grew up on a farm, and I don't fit your profile. The only point you made was what you think. So, please just speak for yourself.

Why should it be illegal?

Because we're a civilized society?

Just askin' :)

I’m sorry but we do rightfully have laws that the vast majority of citizens agree on. It’s called a representative republic and democracy. Dogs are not human but they are higher on the scale than rocks or plants, sorry. By your logic stray dogs (or cats) in the street can be intentionally run over, tortured, sexually abused, etc. and society would see no harm. We are supposed to leave the next generation a little bit better than the last. I don’t know why you would not want any laws against animal cruelty.

Because we're a civilized society?

I would reckon that 10% - 20% of the people in this country have no problem with dog and/or cock fighting. This matter far from unanimous, even in this "civilized" society.

“I grew up on a farm, and I don’t fit your profile.”

Right, I bet it was one of those organic farms with pretty red barns, a petting pen and so on, probably in Vermont...
