Are the Themes in Thompson's Speeches New, or Are They Just New To Us?

Are the Themes in Thompson's Speeches New, or Are They Just New To Us?

The reaction to that Saturday night speech by Fred Thompson is intriguing. It sounds like there was some "buzz around the office" that Thompson and his associates were thinking of announcing something that evening, but that idea was ultimately rejected.

Jonathan Martin writes that Thompson’s address was a “a sober-verging-on-somber talk,” and summarizes:

There are three major challenges, Thompson said, and none are being given appropriate attention or sufficient commitment. National security ("our country's in danger; it's going to be that way for a long time to come"), the economy ("we are doing steady damage to our economy, that if we don't do things better it's going to result in economic disaster for future generations") and the polarization, cynicism and incompetence gripping the capital ("in order to have leadership you got to have somebody who's going to follow; our people follow, but they don't have any confidence in what's being said or who's saying it").

But is this "sober and serious" tone really anything new? Let’s check out Thompson’s first major speech of his not-quite-campaign, in Orange County, California. On the national mood, he said:

Because Americans are expressing a lot of concern these days about the direction their country is going, there is some concern that maybe we’re slipping away like all the great powers have. We’re hearing a bit of that old malaise talk we used to hear all about. Part of it is Iraq, certainly. Part of it is the economy, believe it or not. The wonderful economy and economic news you continue to hear, the greatest story never told as some people call it, yet people are talking about the threats of globalization and the disparity of income...

Right!? I watched the Iowa Straw Poll speeches at the Fair and wasn’t John Cox the guy who drew 6 people to his speech?

Man some people will go way out to try and compare.

Cox folks are about out to the edge of the Universe even compared to Paulistas. Get real.

Listen, pal, those were the only six true conservatives in Iowa!

John Cox is building momentum and people are turning to him in droves, because Fred is too lazy and sick to decide to run!

Just because you aren’t ready to accept the dizzying intellect of John Cox, doesn’t mean that the rest of the country isn’t turning his way!

I’m flipping supporters of other candidates like pancakes! You’re just slow to get with the program.

"If he doesent declare for the Presidency by Labor Day, you ought to take your song and dance act on the road. IMO, he'd rather get sued for misappropriated fundraiseing than get the show on the road. Why is that? All smoke and no bother; the blather of an unserious man.."

From one of your previous posts.

"At the very least, McCain REALLY wants to be President, so he's got that much over Thompson."

Yeah, the fact he's insane speaks a lot. Hitler would have been better too since we all know he had the fire in his belly. /s

Nothing new under the sun...to quote a genius “...if there’s an original thought out there i could use it right now .”

The thing is...it’s the sincerity and the delivery from a no bullshit * lived * man.

Yeah! Fred stole his whole speech from John Cox, who, as we know is the only TRUE conservative in this race!

Fred had the nerve to mention ‘islamic terror’. John Cox was talking about that weeks ago.

Fred even stole the whole thing about how tax cuts help the economy.

Of course, Fred is just jealous of the sheer awesomeness of John Cox. Anyone who doesn’t support John Cox hates America and meets Larry Craig in bathrooms.

Why declare while America is still on vacation / concentrating on getting the kids back in school? Just to placate all those invested in another candidate? No, thanks.

I predict Monday the 10th, at the beginning of the first full week after Labor Day.

Okay.

Thompson owes Geraghty. This assortment of statements helps piece his campaign together. Sort of a preview of coming attractions.

Seems for comparison’s sake he’s suggesting if a candidate can get a “reagan” victory or an “amnesty” public consensus that shut down Congress then the People can effectively start to take back their government again. He’s billing himself as the candidate that not only can build that consensus of approval, but will act on it.

On amnesty, could be wrong, but my take based on these statements and others that he supports a fence and employer enforcement, supports attrition, but the people here already don’t concern him in the same the next 15 or more million do because those next millions probably intend more harm then the bulk of poor that mainly crossed prior just for jobs... say this because those thoughts seem to follow talk of nukes and terrorists actively plotting in present for harm in future.

IMO, that means he’d support amnesty for anyone already here that doesn’t self deport back home once the fence and employer sanctions are functioning. Everyone won’t like that. The public as a whole would find that acceptable compromise.

I single his thoughts on amnesty out only because it’s been my sticking point about fred. Just what he thinks about the issue, and think I’m starting to get in his head here a bit.

Interesting how this plays out.

Rudy is all about 9-11 imagery.

Romney is all about saying what you want to hear and style.

McCain is an echo of compassionate conservatism.

Fred seems to want to depart typical politics and just, not to rip Mccain, just speak straight.

That could either destroy his chances, or win him the presidency. Given the disgust everyone has toward D.C. and pols right now, with some luck & hard work, could be the latter.

We’ll see. But I’ll admit these gathered statements by Geraghty appeal to me right now. I’m sick of politics, and those statements didn’t read like pol speak.

Romney’s been talking about it in every campaign appearance I’ve seen covered on C-Span.

Oh, sure, it MUST be sarcasm, just because you can’t recognize the political juggernaut that IS John Cox.

By the way, I have some great land in Florida that you may be interested in purchasing. Waterfront property! :)

You're not going to vote for him anyway.

I may not have a choice. I'm not going to sit on the sidelines if the alternative is Herr Hitlery.

I think we are all in that same boat, a lot of people are going to be facing a different candidate in the general election than they are in the primary. We hope our guy makes it, you for yours and me for Fred.

The sticking point for me in that, is that whoever gets the nomination and hopefully is elected needs a mandate. The more people who vote for him, the more of a mandate he will have. Whether it is your candidate or mine, they need a mandate to govern effectively. I would hope that freepers could refrain from trashing other candidates for that reason, and it will make it easier for everyone to pull together in the general election. I don’t mean it is wrong to say I prefer this one over the others, or I agree more with this candidate over others. But I mean outright trashing. Already a reporter got on FR and got a couple of the trash type comments about Fred. And wrote them into an article. That stuff does not help. Some people started trashing Fred, and other candidates, then if you reply in kind, it is hard to stop. I hope the negativity will fizzle out.

Although I have gotten really hot about some things said about Fred. It is hard not to. But I really try to refrain if I can rein it in.

I know several other candidates have gotten their share of trashing. Some freepers are famous for their trash talk. It makes it harder to stop.

I just can’t understand why she didn’t post on this thread the address to send donations to her candidate’s campaign. After all, there are just droves....

I disagree. The earlier the bad stuff comes out, the better. The untruths will be discredited and put to bed and the other stuff will have to be rationalized away. You dont want to get caught with your pants down 2 weeks before the election (like Bush with that DWI thing. It almost derailed him)

To a limited extent, you misunderstand. The DWI charge about Bush was true. Yes, you don’t want to get caught like that. Bush made a big mistake there.

Trash talk to me means things that are not true. False charges. It is always nice to have time to refute though. To that extent it is nice if it isn’t at the last minute.

Second point, does our side have to generate that kind of stuff? Bear in mind that I’m talking about things that are not true.

Depends on what you mean by "true". One man's "truth" is another mans "distortion" and "out of context slander".

For example. is Guliani a "baby killer" , or did he just accede to policies put in place by his predecessor and popular with the public?

I say, throw it out there and sees if it sticks. All this nonsense about treating each other with kid gloves is not going to apply in a general election against the ruthless mendacity of Gruppenführer Hitlery.
