George Bush is not a very popular fellow.
Witness the enraged reaction last week from critics to his suggestion that leaving Iraq now could have the same dire consequences as our withdrawal from Vietnam did. "It just boggles my mind, the distortions I feel are perpetrated here by the president," cried historian Robert Dallek. "Misleading rhetoric," chimed in Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa.
What is it about Bush that evokes such furor?
Let's start with the hard left, whether in Hollywood or the blogosphere, or among the academic elite. They hate George Bush. To them, his tax cuts, alliance with the religious right, opposition to abortion and gay marriage, and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq foster the image of an illiberal, imperial America. His strut and mangling of words are more salt in their wounds.
The mainstream Democratic Party has been pretty vocal in its dislike, too. Al Gore's veins bulge when he speaks of George Bush. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosis lips curl.
Many Democratic politicians still smart from the loss of the 2000 election, when they won the popular vote but still lost the White House. By making an opposition president a constant target, Democrats only help their party in the national elections, as we saw in 2006.
That's why Democratic elders haven't really signed onto the president's occasionally progressive agenda: liberal immigration reform, big increases in entitlements and support for democracy-building abroad.
However venomous this current Democrat attack machine, it is somewhat similar to what Republicans did to Bill Clinton in the 1990s. That's what rough-and-tumble two-party politics is about.
Of course, there are even Bushophobes among Republicans and right-wingers. Ultra-conservatives don't like open borders or the president's

The past five years have shown that VDH is about as perceptive an analyst on foreign policy as Dick Morris is on American politics.
I don’t hate him and think he’s done a decent job in the WOT. I do think he (and govt as a whole) have forgotten that he’s supposed to serve we the people.
Sounds like a hit TV show.
it won’t matter...the rats need America to fail if they are to suceed....
A toned down Victor Hansen gets posted on CBS News website.
I hate the moral equivalence of this statement. Right, we opposed Clinton, they oppose Bush. ..its all the same!
Clinton was a lying, cheating, rapist with very bad intentions and ideas. Bush is a decent person with strong convictions and principles. He happened at a time in history when such a principled leader was essential as we face the most extreme threat to freedom in America's history.
Wrong Dr Hanson. Bill Clinton was guilty of gross misconduct. Bush isn't. To compare the two in this fashion is intellectually absurd.
WHY DO THEY HATE US SO?
I’m talking about the Democrats, not the terrorists.
George Soros funds the BDS movement. Who was the billionaire foreigner who orchestrated the anti-Clinton movement?
Great piece of writing from VDH, as always.
It amazes me how little credit Bush gets for the fact our mainland has not been attacked since 9-11. On one expected that and it is a great Bush achievement.
The Democrats and bin Laden agree on Bush.
France and Germany have rejected the leaders in their respective countries that agreed with them. As has Canada to a lesser extent...and the Brits just installed a PM thats more conservative than Blair from what I can tell.
That leaves the Dems with only the Islamofacists and on alternate days Putin in Russia....(chuckle)
Oh, and Syrian and Iran agree with the Democrats. Can’t forget those shining lights of ‘tolerance’, right?
Jealousy ... plain and simple.
That graphic illustrates the rats completely.
You are correct about the great graphic and the Cube!
Without checking with Mondale and McGovern, I would venture to say it’s much more bitter to lose by a nose than to lose to a landslide.
Season it with their contempt for all Republicans as ignorant and inferior, and you have a very sore injury to lick.
Then pile on a SECOND shot at “vindication,” and lose AGAIN to the election-stealing mental midget that is GWB in their eyes...
Of course they are deranged with hatred, and they will never get over it. Never. If Clinton were to become president, which she won’t, she’d hack out his name and image like an ancient potentate, and only call him the political equivalent of “that heretic.”
