The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. I wonder if anyone has a link to the jihadi “movie poster” from a couple months ago that said something like “Coming to a Theater Near You”. Sounds like the same theme . I wonder if this image appeared on the same site or came from the same source.

Reminds me of the calendar that was printed in Europe (the Netherlands?) in the spring of 2001 with the image of the plane and skyscrapers burning.

There are three buildings burning in this image. Not two.

Not sure. Just eyeballing it, the third building looks like just one of the towers pasted in a second time from a different angle (or the same tower three times from three angles - - I don’t know which images are which tower).

Just odd that they would use three as a number.

I tried a quick search for the movie poster (like the Haunting, wasn’t it?)but couldn’t find it.

I enlarged it on my computer and I agree with you, looks like 3 buildings.

Also, the number 9 appears twice near the bottom of the image. 9/9?

I see one on each side of the screen towards the bottom (the left one being near the tip of S. America), but assumed they were part of the arabic script.
