Threat Matrix: September 2007

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Three, and the most striking, the Taliban’s systematic supplanting of the traditional tribal leadership in the area. Full story...

Taliban spokesman arrested in Afghanistan
Friday Sept. 28, 2007

KABUL: The main spokesman for the extremist Taliban movement, Yousuf Ahmadi, has been arrested in southern Afghanistan, the interior ministry said Thursday.

Ahmadi was arrested with his brother on Wednesday in volatile Helmand province, where the Taliban are in control of several districts, the ministry said in a statement. He is the third Taliban spokesman to have been arrested since the hardline Islamic movement began their insurgency after being toppled from government by US-led forces in late 2001.

Eugene Airport update snippet:

According to Denver’s KUSA news, the passenger told FBI agents that he put the pipe, wrapped in black tape, in his shoulder bag because it was too light and he wanted to ‘counterweight’ the other bag he was carrying.

Watch the KGW report Police k-9s searched the plane after it landed in Denver, it came back with negative results. The passenger and his companion were interviewed by authorities.

The FBI did not reveal the identity of the Eugene man and said the man had been allowed to continue his trip to France.

The Al-Qaeda-Taleban Nexus in Waziristan
Friday, 28, September, 2007 (16, Ramadhan, 1428)

Urging the people in Pakistan to wage jihad against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, Osama Bin Laden in his latest audio message released on Sept. 20 issued the first-ever direct threat to the president. Declaring Al-Qaeda’s intent to take revenge for the death of Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi of the Red Mosque who was killed in an armed confrontation with the Pakistan security forces in Islamabad in July, Bin Laden drew the lines of battle against the Pakistan Army and an already besieged Musharraf declaring him a “tyrant” and “an apostate.”

The president has survived several assassination attempts and is at present facing the strongest political opposition since assuming power in 1999. The legality of his seeking re-election as president, while holding the office of chief of the Army Staff is at present being debated in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Incidentally Bin Laden’s threat to Musharraf at this time might work to the advantage of the president. Based on Bin Laden’s warning, a case of threat to national security could be built up and this could make the possibility of declaring an emergency likely.

Wary of nuclear terrorism, Alabama city reopens fallout shelters
9/27/07

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - In an age of al-Qaida, sleeper cells and the threat of nuclear terrorism, Huntsville is dusting off its Cold War manual to create the country's most ambitious fallout-shelter plan, featuring an abandoned mine big enough for 20,000 people to take cover underground.

Others would hunker down in college dorms, churches, libraries and research halls that planners hope will bring the community's shelter capacity to 300,000, or space for every man, woman and child in Huntsville and the surrounding county. Emergency planners in Huntsville - an out-of-the-way city best known as the home of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center - say the idea makes sense because radioactive fallout could be scattered for hundreds of kilometres if terrorists detonated a nuclear bomb.

Army of Islam Gunmen March in Funeral
Friday September 28, 2007

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Hundreds of gunmen from the shadowy Army of Islam marched in a funeral for five Gaza militants Thursday, firing in the air in their first public appearance in such large numbers.

The five Army of Islam members buried Thursday were among a total of 12 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes over two days. The Israeli military said it has targeted militants involved in rocket fire on Israeli border towns. A statement from the group posted on Islamic Web sites on Thursday said a sixth member wounded in Wednesday's strike against its men had since died of his injuries, but did not say when.

The Army of Islam, an offshot of Gaza's ruling Hamas group, has been linked to the March kidnapping of BBC journalist Alan Johnston, since released, and the June 2006 capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Individual members have made public statements, but the size of the group was never apparent. However, some 300 Army of Islam gunmen marched in Thursday's funeral procession. Sporting long beards and black headbands, many wore dark robes, a style of dress more common in Afghanistan or Pakistan than in Gaza. Gunmen, some wearing masks, fired Kalashnikov and M-16 assault rifles in the air.

Will the 12th Imam cause war with Iran?
28/09/2007

Not since the prime minister of the tiny Caribbean island of Grenada presented an address claiming that UFOs posed a mortal threat to the future of mankind has the United Nations been treated to such a bizarre spectacle. Many people believe the greatest threat to world peace concerns Iran's nuclear programme, so there was understandably great interest at this week's general assembly in New York when the country's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, took the platform.

But instead of seeking to reassure delegates that Iran's nuclear intentions were purely benign, Mr Ahmadinejad took advantage of his official visit to a country deemed – in the lexicon of the Iranian Revolution – "the Great Satan" to embark on a discourse about the wonders of the 12th Imam.

U.S. has stake in Europe’s Islam struggle
Thursday, September 27, 2007

The story of the week earlier this month wasn’t Gen. David Petraeus’ testimony on Iraq, although it dominated the headlines. The story of the week wasn’t the sixth return of Sept. 11 since the jihad atrocity of 2001, although it inspired many public statements and ceremonies. The week’s biggest story garnered little press and few comments. But, in a significant way, this overlooked story - an outrageous display of police force in Brussels on Sept. 11, 2007 - symbolizes the missing link in our flawed comprehension of both Iraq and Sept. 11.

There, in the so-called capital of Europe, 200 people marked the day with a protest against the Islamization of Europe - a civilizational shift that, as Europe increasingly accommodates Shariah (Islamic law), is shockingly advanced. Indeed, Middle East expert Bernard Lewis has already predicted Europe will become Islamic by century’s end. Absent a reversal of Islamization (which remains possible), I’m guessing sooner than that.

Fears of Al Qaeda terror plot from Pakistan’s tribal belt
Friday, 28 September, 2007

PESHAWAR: Al Qaeda is taking advantage of Pakistan’s political turmoil to ramp up operations in the tribal belt and possibly plot fresh terrorist attacks abroad, Western and Pakistani officials warn.

As President Pervez Musharraf battles to retain power, violence is surging in Waziristan, where Osama bin Laden’s senior henchmen have taken shelter behind a corps of Taliban fighters. “They have humiliated the army and made things very difficult for a president who is already in trouble. It’s a very clever strategy,” said a western military official. The UK and US fear that a “catastrophic” terrorist attack could be launched from Waziristan, he added.

Waziristan’s place as a hub of Al Qaeda operations was highlighted recently when police in Germany arrested three men - two Germans and a Turk - accused of plotting to attack a US military base in the country.

California man found guilty in eco-terrorist plot (faces up to 20 years in prison and $250K fine)
ap on Riverside Press Enterprise ^ | 9/27/07 | AP

Posted on 09/27/2007 8:35:08 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

SACRAMENTO - A federal jury on Thursday found a 29-year-old environmental activist guilty of conspiring to burn down or blow up a northern California dam, a genetics lab, cell phone towers and other targets.

Eric McDavid of Foresthill, Calif. faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for what FBI agents said was as an eco-terrorist plot in the name of the Earth Liberation Front, a shadowy, loose-knit group of environmentalists that has claimed credit for arsons throughout the West.

McDavid and two others were arrested in January 2006 after purchasing bottles of bleach, a car battery, potassium chloride and other items prosecutors said were being used to build plastic explosives.

McDavid’s two co-defendents pleaded guilty last year in exchange for testifying against McDavid.

Jurors listened to them and testimony from an undercover FBI informant before deliberating for 11 hours and returning the guilty verdict.

McDavid’s attorney argued he was a victim of entrapment because the FBI informant provided money and help to buy the items.

U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott called the verdict a message the ELF “is misdirected in its tactics and a danger to the community.”

“Eric McDavid and others like him choose to put innocent civilian lives in jeopardy for the sake of advancing their own extreme views,” Scott said in a statement.

The Nimbus Dam on the American River near Sacramento, and the U.S. Forest Service’s Institute of Forest Genetics in Placerville, in the foothills east of Sacramento, were among the alleged targets.

Press Release A070928a

Coalition forces capture wanted terrorist, detain six suspects

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces captured a wanted suspected terrorist and detained six other suspects during operations Friday to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations in the Tigris River Valley.

Coalition forces captured a suspected terrorist in Bayji believed to be associated with al-Qaeda in Iraq and have a significant role in recent attacks in the city. Intelligence led the ground force to his exact location where he identified himself and was captured without incident.

In two precision operations in Tarmiyah and Baghdad, Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists during raids targeting individuals reported to be key communications links to al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leaders and their associates in and outside the country. Also in Baghdad, Coalition forces targeted an individual believed to be involved in attacks on Coalition forces in the area. Three suspected terrorists were detained on site.

“We’re steadily chipping away at the al-Qaeda in Iraq network,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “The disruption to their operations and supply of information hinders al-Qaeda in Iraq’s ability to attack innocent Iraqis.”

Aren’t you the busy beaver!

You won’t find out from the article, but Foresthill is in an area of inland California that has become an enclave for retired Bay Area school teachers. It is the only part of inland California that is not solidly conservative. It runs from Auburn up to Grass Valley and Nevada City. The Birkenstock Nation.
