TEHRAN'S CHILLING NEW BOAST
New York Post ^ | 9/3/07 | AP Staff

September 3, 2007 -- TEHRAN - Iran's president claimed yesterday that his country is now running 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium for its nuclear program - a long-sought goal that could add momentum to efforts to impose new U.N. sanctions on the Islamic republic. The claim is at odds with a report by the U.N. nuclear-watchdog group Thursday that put the number at close to 2,000. The International Atomic Energy Agency said enrichment had slowed and Iran was cooperating with its nuclear probe, which could fend off calls for a third round of sanctions. "The West thought the Iranian nation would give in after just a resolution, but now we have taken another step in the nuclear progress and launched more than 3,000 centrifuge machines, installing a new cascade every week," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in remarks carried by the state TV Web site. Iran claimed it was operating 3,000 centrifuges in April, but the IAEA said at the time that Iran had only 328 centrifuges.

Iran change the gov’t on it’s own? Keep smokin’ that dope...

The time has long passed for this stuff.

I say that W should have a massive attack against the nukes in Iran. However, frankly, I feel there is nearly NO chance this will happen.

W just does not have the cajones to do it...

Disgusting leadership in that country. It is responsible for keeping its people down. It should be doing something useful with its power, not promoting global jihad.

I wonder how hard it would be to "convince" some of the top military officers to take out Amadingynutjob

I suspect it would be pretty hard, as the "Revolutionary Guard" is probably in charge of internal security and keeps the rest of the generals under the gun. Their loyalty is assured by the perks they enjoy and the probable consequences of being exposed in treasonous activities.

one only has to look at the history/structure of other arab states to see that this avenue is absurd.

Iran is not an arab state. But it is a totalitarian islamic police state. Popular uprising without the military support is a daydream.

“I’d really prefer to see the Iranians themselves take care of Ahmadinejad before the United States gets backed into doing something about him.”

Destroy their military capabilities first. Also a decapitating strike on their leadership would create the time and space needed for the opposition to fill the vaccum.

Best part about it is it leaves mookie and the radicals in Iraq exposed.

Gee, the UN was wrong? How can this be?!?! I'm completely shocked that a hostile middle eastern country, run by islamic fundamentalists, whos stated goal is to wipe Israel off the map would lie about something like this! Shocked, I tell you! Who would have thought that they would lie about something like this?!?!

Following his inauguration in 2000, Bush should have done the following:

1. Fire all Clinton-appointments in State, Justice, Intelligence;
2. Prosecute Democrat corruption past and present;
etc.

I really think that's the best bet and I'm sure we have covert people doing some arm twisting right now as I type this. Personally, I think a lot of Ahmadinejad's claims are B.S. designed to distract his population from the fact that he's driving their economy into the ground.

It is easy to beat the drums of war here on Free Republic where people can preach to the choir but let's be real. Does anyone really think that out in the real world, the American population is going to tolerate pre-emptive strikes against Iran during the waning days of a lame-duck presidency? If the nuclear sites need to be taken out, let's pass along intel to Israel and let them handle it. Then we can stand aside, issue some pro forma denunciations, and keep our hands clean. Israeli airstrikes against Iran would result in some measure of anger from the Arab world but would unlikely inflame Arab passions as Arab Sunnis aren't really fond of seeing a Persian Shi'ite Iran dominate the Middle East as a nuclear power.

Within weeks of 9/11, attack the Taliban and Afghanistan. *Check*

Within months of 9/11, depose Saddam. *Check*

Within days of 9/11, close the southern border and reform immigration and visa procedures. *Oops*

Within months of 9/11, take out Iran’s nuclear capability and decapitate the terrorist-sponsoring leadership. *Ummm*

He’s batting 50% at most, in my opinion.

I have little confidence in the resolve of this administration anymore.

These guys have given up on governing, and Bush's staff (think of a bunch of Monica's) are running amok. The adults could not care less what happens. They are tired (we should go to a six year one-term presidency - 8 is too much for anyone). If this were England we would have staged a no-confidence vote, held elections and had a new crowd in 6 months ago.

There is something to be said for a parliamentarian system. While the ability to throw the bums out quickly leads to instability in many cases, in extreme times such as this it has advantages.

As with more than a few issues, this Admin does not rely on public input to base it’s decisions.

I was listening to the weekly intelligence report from Stratfor.com. The wheels seem to be in motion.

The Iranian people rising up and tossing out the mullahs is possible, but not likely. It’s very rare when a people gets up enough courage and energy to do that, and it helps immensely when the government they wish to topple is on the skids, like in the Soviet Republics. However, there are far, far more examples of people doing nothing to oust their oppressive governments.
