Migrants learning online
Orange County (CA) Register ^ | September 5, 2007 | AMY TAXIN

Mexican students who don't finish high school back home can complete their degree from the United States.

SANTA ANA – Adriana stares at the Mexican government Web site to figure out her social studies homework for the week.

Only she's no longer toting her backpack to class in her Mexican hometown – she's perched on top of a stool in downtown Santa Ana, signing up for her classes with a mouse click.

"I'm here to move forward, to make something of my life," said Adriana, who was forced to quit high school in Mexico when her father brought her to live in Orange County. "I want to feel proud."

Mexico's online high school program, or bachillerato, is designed for students in Mexico who work to support their families or resume their studies as adults. But it is also proving useful for students like Adriana who cut their education short to migrate to the United States.

In Santa Ana, the program is just beginning. At local community center El Centro Cultural de Mexico, volunteer teachers are signing up students for courses online, printing out reading packets and offering weekly tutorials on biology, math and philosophy.

"This is a space for those young people who haven't found their place in the formal education system – neither in Mexico nor in the United States," said Socorro Torres Sarmiento, community affairs coordinator for the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana.

Or perhaps she could perch her illegal azz on a bus back to mee-he-co so she does not miss classes because SHE IS IN JAIL.

I am glad to see that Mexico is doing this and we (taxpayers) are not paying for this girls education in the U.S.
Of course the ultimate outcome would be for her to be deported and get her online Mexican education from her home in Mexico.

I’m sure the site offers English as a Second Language.

No, I’m beyond angry at this. There’s countless American kids who can’t afford internet because their parents are being bilked by this girl’s family and friends.

Nor can American kids barely afford college and books.

I have more than a few problems with this. One being that the article states that "Each student must pass 33 classes. Each exam – one per class – costs $3. Students can download and print materials for free at El Centro."

What is the nature of these classes? The article mentions biology, math and philosophy. What are the other 30? Are we teaching history? Mexican history?

The article also says that the consulate was providing books and training for volunteers to begin providing tutoring to accompany the online curriculum. Isn't this the same consulate that was providing Mexican textbooks to U.S. public k-12 schools?

And then there is this:

"Jose Torres, 23, was working at an accounting firm in Mexico but couldn't get promoted without his high school degree. He completed nearly all of the requirements four years ago but still has five classes left that he plans to complete online while visiting family in Orange County."

Isn't that grand? Jose can't get promoted in Mexico so he is going to "visit" Orange County while he completes his high school degree? Oh really? Is this like the 9-month pregnant tourista deciding on a visit to Disneyland and ... oops ... drops one on US soil?

And, finally, to whom are we pledging allegiance?

Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana

Santa Ana, illegal alien heaven. The only Americans you will see there work at the courthouse.

Were you in OC back when the City of Santa Ana hired image consultants? I think that was before they built the art village area and one Mex was quoted in the paper saying "THEY won't like it here. WE'RE loud. WE'RE Mexican."

In other news, I see LOTS of autos in my bumper-to-bumper hoodlet lately sporting license tag frames from dealerships in LaLa LaRazaville.

I think we had moved by then. We were out of Orange in 1996.

Image consultants? That's laughable. How could they gloss over the reality of the gangbangers, the shootings, the Tijuana-clone that Santa Ana became?
