Republicans bash MoveOn.org over anti-Petraeus ad
Boston.com ^ | Sept. 10, 2007

Posted on 09/10/2007 7:06:13 PM PDT by Canticle_of_Deborah

Mitt Romney this morning blasted the liberal political group MoveOn.org for questioning the independence of General David H. Petraeus on the eve of his much-anticipated testimony today to Congress on the Iraq war.

In a full-page ad in today's New York Times, the group asked in a headline, "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" and accused the top US military commander in Iraq of "cooking the books for the White House."

Romney called the ad "outrageous," adding, "Like the men he commands, he is risking his life to protect our freedoms here at home. We should not prejudge him or his testimony, or give him anything less than the full respect he deserves."

In his presidential campaign, Romney has generally supported the Bush administration's policy in Iraq and has said the so-called surge of 30,000 additional US troops is working.

"Democrats must make a choice," Romney said in a statement. "Will they embrace these deplorable tactics or give General Petraeus a fair hearing? It should be the hope of all Americans that we give him a fair hearing. Certainly, he and our men and women in Iraq deserve it. In the coming days and weeks, there will be much debate about the future course in Iraq, but this debate should be free of the kind of shameful tactics MoveOn.org has shown today. It's time we heard from the generals, not Washington politicians and not ultra-liberal advocacy groups. All Americans should keep an open mind."

"Fred’s just grinning in silence."

Well, not really.

However, don't take that as an endorsement of Fred. I'm still waiting but leaning hard Romney.

One of the reasons I like Mitt....he fires back! Were were the rest of the conservatives on this?

There's that phrase again! Talking points have been issued.

Me too. Mitt likes to compete. That might be a dirty word to some but it is a necessary trait to win and govern.

Fred did respond, on a thread located... oh.... 4 threads before this one was started.

I’m not committed to Fred, but it appears a bit distasteful to lay false attacks on another candidate, no matter what your own agenda is.

And they wonder why their corrupt media industry is dying.

Don't count on it

The NBC CBS ABC CNN still controls public opinion or the democrats would have been relegated to the ash heap of history long ago

Why do you think they regained congress in 2006

It’s been his behavior all along. Congratulations though, if he finally did more than smirk and walk away from an issue.

The Republic’s enemies have identified themselves..

The list of organizations, politicians and individuals is quite long...
The list of “newspapers”, radio stations and TV networks who have clearly biased the “news” and worked against the Republic is also long....

I am confident that one day they will ALL suffer the consequences....

Law abiding folks can be pushed just so far — and no further.

Fred’s statement: “MoveOn.org has today, in effect, said that the General leading our brave troops in Iraq is betraying his country. This is the group that funds the Democratic Party. I call upon the Democratic Party and all of the Democratic candidates for President to repudiate the libel of this patriotic American.”

I’d like to see the Republican party as passionate and clever about our issues as MoveOn.org. “General Betray Us” is very clever. Guess we’ll have to wait for Mitt to be GOP chair to turn things around (I have predicted complete electoral failure should Fred get the nomination).

Were you talking about W? Are you Ann Richards by chance?

The irony of it all is that these witless mouth-breathers aren’t even original - Rush Limbaugh thought up the “Petraeus vs. Betrayus” angle:

This kind of quick response, calling the Liberals out on behavior like this, is one of the reasons I support Mitt Romney. He won’t just “be” a great leader — he IS a great leader.

In the same article (if some haven’t read it), John McCain also came out with a statement - challenging the Democrats and Democratic candidates to issue a statement against MoveOn.org’s activities.

It will be very interesting to see if they do or not.

As I said, I am supporting Romney, but I must say, after the debate last week, I was left feeling really grateful for the quality of candidates we have to choose from.

Also, Duncan Hunter did a great job today in the Petraeus hearings.

Mitt would make a phenomenal GOP chair. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. Sometimes people have to hit rock bottom to change.

I’m still confident that Mitt can seal the deal and get the nomination. Fred has yet to be tested in any debate and he’s giving vague answers to the press and in his stump speeches. This will not endear him to the media.

“The New York Slimes gave those commie pukes at moveon.org a 61% discount to run that contemptible trash.”

The fourth estate is a fifth column. And moveon.org is political pornography.

Is that because he’s been convicted and kicked out every country in which he has lived? Citizen of the world, my foot.
