Running the numbers on Vista (it's tanking)
CNet/The New York Times ^ | 09/11/2007 | Ina Fried

September 11, 2007 Running the numbers on Vista Ina Fried, for News.com Sales of boxed copies of Windows Vista continue to significantly trail those of Windows XP during its early days, according to a soon-to-be-released report.

Standalone unit sales of Vista at U.S. retail stores were down 59.7 percent compared with Windows XP, during each product's first six months on store shelves, according to NPD Group. In terms of revenue, sales are also down, but the drop has been less steep, at 41.5 percent. The findings largely mirror the sales pattern NPD saw for Vista during its first week on the market in January.

"It's just not doing well," NPD analyst Chris Swenson said of Vista's performance at retail stores, though he added that most people get their operating system on new PCs, with only a minority of customers purchasing boxed copies. The report, titled "Windows Vista Still Underperforming in U.S. Retail," will be sent to clients Friday.

Ahead of Vista's release, the software maker said that it expected businesses to adopt the new operating system at twice the rate of XP during its first year on the market.

However, many businesses have said they are waiting until Microsoft releases the first update to Vista before considering deployments of the operating system. Microsoft is starting beta testing of its first service pack for Windows Vista, though that update won't be released in final form until next year.

We are close to adopting that OS to run our next 64 bit Test Executive. Is this going to be a bad idea?

“Most computers from before mid ‘05 or so will NOT work with Vista. Bad move by MS. In contrast, I know someone who got a 2000 G4 Cube Mac to run Tiger, even though the computer’s CPU is only 500 MHz. Not bad for a computer originally designed for Mac OS 9.”

Geez that sounds great. Sort of makes you wonder why Apple OS’s are only what... 2-3% of the installed OS’s in the world?

How can all those people be so wrong?

Well, according to most, don’t get Vista! I have no direct experience with Vista (XP here) but have not elected to upgrade for both bugs and Microsoft’s relationship with the Hollywood industry (ie. protection schemes that effect quality video for the user). That alone has dampened all enthusiasm for Vista.

It is also too advanced for todays hardware (not altogether bad) but is also buggy. Too many of the hardware vendors have yet to release working drivers for existing hardware. This is delaying Vista implementation also.

Maybe in a couple of years...not now.

“Foxit Reader...free. Not sure if it has issues with Vista”

No, they upgraded Foxit to work on Vista. Another great app I have on my one XP machine and on my Vista laptop is Quick Time Alternative.

Like Foxit it is small and fast and doesn’t look for reasons to start up unless you need it.

Unfortunately, I have other software that won’t work with OS X, and for my current budget, a Mac is a bit expensive, if I factor in new software :(
Hopefully I can get a Mac for my next computer.

I’ve got vista on my new laptop. I find it to be not bad at all. Lots of features that XP doesn’t come close to, IMPO. Just takes getting use to.

IMO, their search feature for finding things on my hard drive, has become a real pain. I liked the search interface for XP better.

“Adobe has siezed up every OS I’ve ever owned”

Get rid of Adobe reader and get Foxit. It is much smaller, faster and is free!

Also it sounds like you could us more RAM.

After reading up on Vista, I bought a Mac. The more I read, the happier I am with my decision.

Vista may be stable, but it orphans lots of devices due to lack of drivers.

Take a look at ...

1) Congress
4) The “front-runners” of both parties

Looked great at work, until it refused to print a page scanned with color. Otherwise it’s great.

I bought a new machine several weeks ago with Vista installed and no problems as of this time. It works well with all programs I’ve installed, no problems with my modem or the net. Not sure what all the fuss is really.

I had to buy a new laptop too, I had back surgery in July and my old laptop (fujitsu lifebook that I love!) was too heavy to carry around. I bought a cheap acer and bought more ram and a duel core processor. After 3 days with Vista I was ready to throw it out. What I finally did was buy a new hard drive for my desk top PC to use as a back up drive and got a copy of XP olm ($98 I think). I wiped the laptop and loaded xp and now it’s a pretty good laptop

A buddy of mine and my son both bought laptops the beginning of August. Both came with Vista.

Neither has had any issues with Vista. Perhaps they’re just using it the wrong way.

Apple has a 15 percent market share of PCs sold at retail and online, according to NPD. But more important, you also can see why even modest gains translate into outsized growth in Cupertino. The overall U.S. PC market is so large - 65.5 million were sold in 2006 - that picking up a percentage point of share for Apple, which last year sold about 3.1 million Macs, means its unit sales would jump 20 to 25 percent.
