WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida, who took over as the first Hispanic chairman of the Republican National Committee earlier this year with a pledge to reach out to minorities, is expected to resign the post early next year.

But don't expect any improvement - the RNC head is usually picked by an incimbent President, and Bush will just appoint another amnesty zealot to the post.
Republicans better get ready for a complete wipeout next year - as bad as 1974-76. It will be a horrible 4-6 years, but it may be the cleansing act needed to return the party to its roots and beliefs.

If Martinez resigns, whom should his replacement be? I hope that he’ll be replaced by Asa Hutchinson. He’s a conservative who was the U.S. Attorney for Arkansas, 1982-’86; Chairman of the Ark. GOP, 1993-’97; U.S. Rep., 1997-2001; Head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, 2001-’03; and a Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, 2003-’05.

IIRC Duncan is a good guy from what other freepers said, from Kentucky I think. He did a really good job building up the party on a local level. He didn’t have enough name recognition to do it all on his own.
However I know nothing of where he stands on issues. Can’t remember, that. But he was doing a lot of mentoring of college students to get them started in the business world, maybe helping them start businesses. He used to work for a bank in a rural area IIRC [again].
You asked a good question. When his name came up I didn’t hear anything negative about him from anyone who knew anything of him.

I agree with you about Rep. Paul. I was in the navy, and I worked near Baghdad, in the Triangle of Death, for six months. I hoped that all Americans supported my unit’s mission of killing and capturing terrorists, but Paul didn’t support us.

Once again you seem to have selective amnesia about the PRIMARY election that ear. Florida had the following people ALL come up and run for the Senate: Betty Castor, Peter Deutsch, Alex Penelas, Bernard Klein, Mel Martinez, Bill McCollum, Doug Gallagher, Johnnie Byrd, Karen Saull, Sonya March, and Larry Klayman.
It's not as though Martinez and Castro were the "only" people on the planet to file for the Senate that year, therefore forcing ALL Republicans to vote for Martinez.
Florida Republicans could have EASILY avoided the Martinez/Castro matchup situtation by simply nominating a different Republican (and they had half a dozen to choose from) for the Senate.
You can thank your fellow Republican grassroot voters for Martinez, and the many "true conservative" freepers on this board who worked their butt off to nominate him, denouncing current Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum as an "unelectable loser who will never win statewide" and a "gun-grabbing RINO sellout who is the darling of the radicial homosexuals"

If the useful idiot wing of conservatism hadn't cast their lot with Martinez, he would have had as much success in the primary as Harriet Miers did with her Supreme Court nomination.
